J.R. Martinez enlisted in the army as a teenager and in 2003 just a couple months into his tour in Iraq, the 19-year-old drove his Humvee over a landmine. With burns over 40 percent of his body including his face, Martinez’ career in the military was done and he had a long road to recovery ahead of him. Switching careers, Maritnez joined the cast of ABC’s soap opera “All My Children” in 2008. He also traveled across the country to speak to wounded veterans about his experience and has said he gave them hope and they gave him purpose.
