When Nicole Kidman won an Emmy for her work on Big Little Lies recently, people couldn’t help but notice that she only shouted out the two daughters she has from her marriage to husband Keith Urban. As for the two children she adopted with first husband Tom Cruise, Isabella, 24 and Connor, 22, it seems that her strained relationship with them has to do with Scientology and the fact that Kidman didn’t practice it. They lived with Cruise after the couple split.

According to Vogue, actress Leah Remini, who was a Scientologist and has been speaking out about what she saw for the many years she was involved with it, the kids didn’t want much to do with her. In her book, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Remini allegedly asked Isabella after Cruise’s wedding to Katie Holmes in 2006 if she’d seen her mom in some time. Isabella allegedly replied that her mom was an “SP,” which is a “suppressive person” in Scientology jargon — one who doesn’t support or practice that faith and you must cut contact with.
