15 Celebrities Who’ve Been Involved In Serious Car Accidents
Early this month, Tracy Morgan was involved in highway crash in New Jersey, which killed one of his friends (comedian Jimmy Mack) and severely injured him and other colleagues riding in the Mercedes Sprinter bus. Since then, Morgan’s reps say that he has gone from critical to fair condition and showing signs of improvement. We’re rooting for the comedian, and wish him a happy and speedy recovery.
There are numerous celebrities who’ve been involved in serious car accidents over the years. Some didn’t make it, some survived, and some hurt others when the accidents happened. Here are 15 celebrities who’ve been involved in scary collisions.
Almost six years ago, Freeman was in a terrible crash. His car flipped multiple times on a Mississippi highway. As a result he was seriously injured, suffering nerve damage and paralyzing his left hand. To this day he still wears a compression glove from time to time to help with his hand.
Norwood was involved in a freeway pile-up in 2006, which resulted in the death of motorist Awatef Aboudihaj. Norwood said back in 2012 that she will never get over the death of the woman, and that her guilt is punishment enough. She did, however, pay a large settlement to the family of Aboudihaj, who sued the singer after the crash.
DIANA FRANCES, PRINCESS OF WALES
Princess Diana was traveling with boyfriend, film producer Dodi Al-Fayed, when her car crashed into a pillar in Paris on August 31, 1997 while trying to maneuver away from a group of photographers. She initially survived the crash, put passed hours later. Al-Fyed and the driver also died.
LISA “LEFT EYE” LOPES
April 25, 2002: TLC group member, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, was driving down the road with friends in Honduras when she lost control of her car while attempting to pass a slower vehicle. The car hit a few trees and flipped over several times before crashing. Lopes was the only person out of all the passengers who didn’t survive the accident. One of the passengers was recording video during the ride, all the way up to when the car flipped. This footage was seen in the VH1 documentary, The Last Days of Left Eye.
Walker and friend (and former professional racer) Roger Rodas were driving from a charity event when their Porsche jumped a curb and crashed into a light pole before bursting into flames. Both The Fast and the Furious star and Rodas died on the scene.
Rodman was once involved in a terrible car accident when a friend’s Land Rover flipped over because of a tire problem while driving on the interstate in South Florida. Astonishingly, Rodman and a passenger made it out of the serious crash with barely a scratch on them, but the driver went to the hospital, and his car was completely totaled.
Smith was traveling down South with her lover, Richard Morgan, when he accidentally struck the rear of a truck at high-speed. Smith took the blunt of the impact, withstanding extensive and severe injuries to the entire right side of her body, which caused her death.
Back in 1986, Vandross’ Mercedes Benz crossed the double yellow line on a boulevard in LA and he crashed into two other cars. He sustained broken ribs, while his passenger was killed in the crash. Vandross pled no contest to reckless driving, and settled out of court to pay the passenger’s family more than $600,000.
In 2000, Berry reportedly ran a red light while driving and crashed into another car in West Hollywood. The driver in the other car broke her wrist while Berry suffered a gash on her head. Berry was charged with a misdemeanor for leaving the scene of the accident, but later reported the accident after going to the hospital. She was given probation and a fine.
Back in 1982, Pendergrass severed his spinal cord in an automobile accident after losing control of his Rolls-Royce. Pendergrass became paralyzed from the waist down after the car ended up hitting two trees.
JIMMIE “J.J.” WALKER
Walker, best known for his role as J.J. on Good Times, swerved into the path of another car on July 11, 2000, causing two people in that car to be injured and hospitalized.
Back in 1973, Wonder was almost killed after a log struck the windshield of the car that he was in. His cousin swerved around a logging truck on the South Carolina back road, and attempting to pass the truck he actually hit it, and the a log dislodged and hit Wonder, fracturing part of his skull and giving him a severe brain contusion. He was comatose for a day, but made a full recovery, except for losing his sense of smell.
Brown was involved in a one-car accident in Florida back in 1996. In December of that year, police charged him with DUI for having alcohol, marijuana and cocaine in his system at the time.
Singer Little Richard fell asleep at the wheel back in 1985 while driving and ran into a telephone pole in West Hollywood, California. He was seriously injured, sustaining a broken leg and bruised ribs, but recovered.
Jackson and his entourage were driving in a car on October 14, 1993, which struck two teenagers in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Both teenagers were injured. Jackson offered to pay their medical expenses but was later sued by one of the teenagers for reneging on his offer.
