Black Films That Did Better At The Box Office Than Critics Expected
Do The Right Thing
Spike Lee is notorious for pushing the envelope when it comes to race and social issues. Two films into his career (She’s Gotta Have it and School Daze), critics were ready for a project that would dive straight into racial tensions. Do The Right Thing did okay its opening weekend at the box office considering his past ventures. It placed fifth opening weekend and grossed $3.5 million, more than his previous films combined. It would seem that America was willing to give Spike’s film the attention it deserved as the $6.5 million budget movie earned $27.5 million nationwide.
