Sidney Poitier/Mark Thackeray – To Sir, With Love
Sir Sidney Poitier is one of the most highly regarded African American actors of all time, so naturally one of his characters would fall into this list. His character Mark Thackeray, a young teacher who takes a job at an all white inner city school, comes up with a new a approach to teaching kids by throwing out the textbooks and treating them like adults. This sounds like a terrible idea at first, but his students soon become more mature as a result and thus begin to really learn at school. More importantly, his character demonstrated that he truly cared about his students regardless of their race or social background, a quality that is still missing from many teachers…even in this day and age.
