Let the time match the crime
“If the teen feels like their parents are overreacting and being too strict, it might only lead to them continuing to do the behaviors that got them in trouble,” warns Cofield. “A good example might be grounding them and not allowing them to leave home, and then they start or continue to sneak out or not come home when they should. It’s just important to make sure the crime matches the time and makes sense. Talking about the reasons for the punishment could also help with this.”
