“Talking to them can also provide the parents with a better understanding of why they might have done whatever they did to warrant discipline,” says Cofield. “This could lead to parents learning of deeper issues their teen might be dealing with. Often teens will act out for attention, especially those who might not get any from their parents unless they do something wrong. This is something the parents could learn from talking to their teens more, not only when they do something wrong, but just talking to them more in general.”
