We’re not about to share any new information with you. You know as well as we do that very few people pull off a teeny-weeny bikini as flawlessly as singer Ashanti. The 37-year-old Grammy Award winner knows it too, because when she’s not on stage trying to secure that bag, she’s on a beach, poolside or parlaying and playing with friends in some lush destination far away, all in string bikinis in an array of bright colors. This while we struggle in the cold…
What’s the trick to looking this good at all times? In an interview she did with Newsday a few years ago, Ashanti said it’s all about making her fitness a priority, especially as she gets older.
“Going into my first album, I was 19 or 20 and my metabolism was amazing,” she said. But as she entered her mid-30s, she upped her training, doing “a lot of heavy jump roping, leg presses and squats … lots of cardio, crunches and pushups” with her trainer.
It also was important to the singer to eat cleaner. She pulled red meat, pork and fried food from her diet, replacing such food with juices, salads and other healthy fare.
“I will not eat fast food, at all,” she told the publication. “I will starve before I eat fast food. It’s crucial and essential to eat healthy. For me, personally, it starts with what you put into your body.”
“When people are ordering pizza and pasta, I have to stay strong,” she added. “I try not to eat late. When you’re on the road sometimes it’s 2 or 3 in the morning before you get back. If I know I’m going to eat late, I try to make it a salad or turkey [sandwich] without the bread.”
Her motivation is wanting to look her best when she’s on TV (“Television puts 10 pounds on you”) and when she’s off. And just like she inspires many others with her lean curves, some of your favorites also keep her going hard.
“I like who I am. But people like Halle Berry, J.Lo, Tina Turner, Cher — they look amazing,” she said. “I hope I’m able to maintain that.”
