11 Artists Who Need To Quit Playin’ And Drop That Album
Nowadays, being a popular musician is harder than ever. Expectations from the public are high, there’s so much competition, and everyone has to continually reinvent themselves to maintain their relevance. For our faves, we are willing to wait. But some of our favorite artists have had us on hold for a little too long (We’re talking to you, Lauryn Hill!). Let’s look at 11 artists and the albums we’re waiting on.
It’s been three years since the release of Ocean’s hit studio debut, Channel Orange. With rumors of his follow-up being released this year, fans are getting real tired of waiting. It was reported that Ocean’s newest album would drop on July 31, but when that day came and went without a new album from the “Thinking of You” singer, the Internet erupted. Ocean definitely has something up his sleeve, but there’s no telling if his release is actually on its way anytime soon.
Yeezy has been teasing the masses all year, much like Rihanna, with hot singles like “All Day” and “FourFiveSeconds,” but there doesn’t seem to be an album in sight. While the Yeezy Boosts have folks out here bartering kidneys, the rest of West’s fans just want the controversial rapper to drop his album already.
Drizzy knows how to whet the appetite of his fans. He released If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late earlier this year. However, the album was deemed a mixtape by Drake’s team. What we really want is Views From The 6, the upcoming much-hyped follow-up to Nothing Was The Same, which will no doubt feature “Hotline Bling” and “Back to Back.” With October just around the corner, it would come as no surprise to his fans if Champagne Papi decided to drop that album during his birthday month.
This year, our beloved Ri Ri has delivered hit singles, controversial videos, a Puma clothing line, perfume, and major clapbacks, but we are still waiting on R8. This is the longest break Rihanna has taken since she first entered the music scene. Fans are ravenous for a new album and a world tour from one of the hottest and most unpredictable artists in pop music.
Being a Beyoncé fan has become super stressful since the surprise release of her acclaimed digital album in 2013. It’s been nearly two years and rumors are coming in by the truckload about what Bey is up to. First, there were rumors that the singer and Jay Z were going to make it official and do a joint album, which made the BeyHive lose their minds. Then it was reported that Queen Bey has scrapped that album and was working on her next solo record. Either way, we are all waiting for her next album to drop.
It’s public knowledge that Weezy is having issues with his boss and “father,” Birdman. Wayne has been begging to be released from his contract so he can drop Tha Carter 6 at a label that knows how to treat one of the biggest rappers out there. Through all of the Young Thug/Birdman gossip and scandal, all Weezy fans want is a resolution to this madness so everybody can get back to what’s important: the music.
Since the release of 21, Adele got married, had a baby, won seven Grammys, and 21 is still on the Billboard 200 charts. That’s right. It’s been more than four years and her album is still thriving. At this point, it might be hard to imagine following up such an epic hit, but if anybody can do it, it’s Adele.
Though their Eephus EP just dropped, there’s only six tracks on the mini-record. “Yoga,” “Classic Man” and its remix featuring Kendrick Lamar are the only offerings from Jidenna and Janelle Monáe. While Monae has made it clear that she is focusing on her roster of Wondaland artists, fans would love to have a follow-up to The Electric Lady sometime soon. And as far as Jidenna goes, his Generals are no doubt thirsting for some more musical offerings from the dashing fellow.
With a music career spanning nearly two decades, it’s a wonder that Lauryn Hill has only put out two solo albums in the last 20 years. Her first endeavor, the mega-successful album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was one of the biggest and most influential albums in history. Fans have been chomping at the bit for new music, but Hill has been marching to the beat of her own drum.
Janet Jackson’s been teasing us since earlier this summer with promises of a forthcoming album. She released the first single and video for “No Sleeep” and even announced a world tour, which just kicked off. But what we really want is a full-length album and some videos featuring that famous choreography. Stop playin’, Janet!
Where are you, Maxwell? We’ve been waiting for blackSUMMERS’night for a few years now. Five to be exact. D’Angelo dropped that hot fire last December, so maybe Mr. Grown & Sexy will follow D’Angelo’s neo-soul lead and bless our ears with some new music before the year ends. We can dream, can’t we?
