She was the first Black actress to be nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actress but Dorothy Dandridge began her career in entertainment as a singer. Her mother Ruby, who was a lesbian stage and screen actress, encouraged her daughters to follow in her footsteps. Dorothy formed the singing group The Wonder Children with her sister before they switched the name to The Dandridge Sisters. In 1954, she was nominated for her role in Carmen Jones.
