Maya Angelou
Poet and author Maya Angelou settled into the life of a writer after being a fry cook, nightclub dancer and prostitute. She came into prominence after releasing her first autobiography I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. The civil rights activist, whose work has been centered around racism and identity, married Greek musician Tosh Angelos in 1951. That union ended in divorce three years later but eventually Angelou found love again with her second husband Paul du Feu.
