Barbara Jordan was a Delta woman who achieved a great deal in her lifetime. She was the first African-American to be elected to the Texas Senate after the Reconstruction era and went on the become  the first southern black female elected to the United States House of Representatives and the first African-American woman to deliver the keynote address at a Democratic National Convention. It was at Texas Southern University that she pledged Delta.
