I.N.D.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.T: Celebs Who Didn’t Take Their Husband’s Name After Marriage

Not every woman is interested in dropping her last name after marriage or even taking their husband’s name at all and quite a few leading ladies had no problem keeping their maiden name entirely. There was no hyphenation or dropping of anything, because the name they were born with was perfectly fine. Unlike these women who kept their husband’s last name after divorce, these women didn’t bother making the change to begin with.

Diana Ross

The diva of all divas, Diana Ross, has been married twice and kept her last name during both marriages. She married music executive Robert Ellis Silberstein in 1971, which led to divorce in 1977. She remarried billionaire shipping magnate Arne Naess, Jr. in 1986 and divorced in 2000. The last name Ross rings bells across the world so it makes perfect sense that she hasn’t changed it.

Beyonce Knowles

King Bey took us by surprise when she didn’t change her last name to Carter or at least hyphenate it, but she clearly had other plans in mind and she is a businesswoman. Beyonce Knowles has built a brand around her first name alone and changing it is probably just too much work and we all know who she’s married to anyway. The “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour” does have a nice ring to it though.

 Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is known for her powerful voice, which has made her one of the highest selling artists of our time. Over the course of her career she has been married twice and still kept her name. The diva did not add or hyphenate during her marriage to Tommy Mottola or Nick Cannon.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry has been married three times and stayed to true to her last name every time. She is clearly an established actress with lots of versatility, but when it comes to her name it remains the same. She is currently married to French actor Olivier Martinez and Martinez just doesn’t have the same ring as Berry.

Cynthia Bailey

Cynthia Bailey has established quite the reputation as a successful model and entrepreneur in her own right, so it was no surprise that she kept her name entirely. Her and Peter Thomas are a beautiful couple, but they are both about their business and Cynthia clearly knows the worth of her personal brand.

Bethenny Frankel

Bethenny Frankel has been married twice and never changed her name. It’s not surprising considering her strong personality and passion for her career. She divorced her second husband, Jason Hoppy, in 2013.

 Meagan Good

Meagan Good married Columbia Pictures executive and preacher DeVon Franklin in 2012 and Good is still her last name. She’s an actress that has come a long way and is still building her personal brand, so it makes perfect sense from a business standpoint.

Kim Kardashian

Everyone’s favorite bride (not!) Kim Kardashian has been married twice and kept her last name both times. Considering how much her family values the last name “Kardashian” the odds of her dropping it after she marries Kanye West are highly unlikely. Maybe she will hyphenate or not change it at all. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Mary J. Blige

When Mary J. Blige married record industry executive Martin Kendu Isaacs in 2003 we were so happy for her. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul found love and was glowing. When she tied the knot her marital status changed, but not her last name.

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba married Cash Warren in 2008 after they met on the set of Fantastic Four. The actress kept her last name after tying the knot in Los Angeles.

Drew Barrymore

The last name Barrymore is linked to American stage and cinema royalty. Drew Barrymore is the granddaughter of film legend John Barrymore. With that being said we see why even after being married twice she hasn’t changed her last name. She even gave her last name to her daughter Olive Barrymore Kopelman.

Supermodel Iman has established herself in the fashion and business, which has been built around her first name. Even after being married three times she still hasn’t dropped or hyphenated her name. She is currently married to David Bowie and as he has made a name for himself, so has she.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Broderick just doesn’t sound as nice as Parker on the end. In 1997 the actress married Matthew Broderick in Manhattan. The actress has established quite the brand with the initials S.J.P., so if it’s not broke don’t fit it!

 Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum is a successful model and businesswoman, which may be part of the reason why she never changed her name after marriage. She has been married twice and never altered her name.
