As if you didn’t know of enough celebrities who had a love thing going on at one time or another thanks to us, we’re back with a few more to have you saying “Whaaaat!?” From Jada Pinkett with Grant Hill to Christina Milian and Jamie Foxx, these couples tried to make it work in the spotlight, and well, it didn’t. But at least we have the photos to reminisce! Enjoy.
Marques Houston and Jennifer Freeman
Despite the fact that in the movie, You Got Served, Freeman played Liyah, the little sister of Houston’s character of Elgin, in real life, these two were dating. They could be seen hand-and-hand at red-carpet premieres and taking pictures together extra cuddled up at events, and also doing so on the set of You Got Served. There were even rumors swirling that the two were engaged in 2007. But at some point in 2008, the two called it quits. She’s currently married and Houston is out here casually dating. Am I the only one who always thought she would end up with Omarion?
Grant Hill and Jada Pinkett
Before she was telling the world that she would never leave Will Smith, or he was being absolutely adorable with Tamia, in the early 90s, the two dated. At the time, she was still an up-and-coming star on A Different World. Jada actually spoke about her feelings for Hill in a Los Angeles Times article from 1993 about Hill and diversity issues at Duke University. She said, “What I love about Grant is his innocence. He is grounded, not the spoiled type.” She loved all that for a little while, but the two eventually ended things that same year.
Nia Long and Chris Webber
Somebody definitely has a thing for ballers! Long dated Chris Webber from 1993 to 1995 (see pic from that time here). The two allegedly met at a basketball game and had a pretty serious relationship, one that almost came full circle with marriage. It’s unclear why that didn’t occur, but after dating Tyra Banks later from 2001 to 2004, he finally settled down with his wife Erika in 2009. Nia is currently in a relationship with another basketball player, Ime Udoka, who she has been with since 2009 and has a son with–baby Kez.
Coko and Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler
While his name might not immediately ring a bell, “Butterfly” was the lead lyricist in the group, Digable Planets, known for the song “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat).” The lead singer of SWV and Butler were dating in the mid-90s, and while it’s not clear why things went south, she spoke in a Honey Magazine interview about them being an odd pair, but says they had a tight bond:
“People would ask us, ‘What do y’all talk about?’ because we’re really different,” says Coko of her ex. A shy laugh gets caught in her voice. “I watch TV, he doesn’t. I eat fried food and pork. He doesn’t. So some things were really weird, but he taught me a lot and he learned some things from me. But I think we were too different for it to really last.” Coko smiles as she talks of him, and though she initially claimed she was mad at Ishmael at the time of the interview, it’s clear the two are still good friends.
“He’s a good father,” she continues, “and he was special. We have a special bond, a special relationship.” Raising her eyebrows and lightening her tone, she adds, “He’s a good man. He’s going to make somebody a good husband.”
They had a son together in 1997, his name is Jazz (check him out here).
Iggy Azalea and ASAP Rocky
Before he was being straddled in chairs to make out with current boo, model Chanel Iman, A$AP Rocky was getting female rapper Iggy Azalea to tattoo his name on her fingers. It happened. They had a pretty quick whirlwind…something, that started and ended in 2012, and they were seen all over the place snapping pictures. While he tried to deny a relationship, she confirmed it in an interview with VIBE:
“I don’t know how to put it. It’s like… I… I don’t know… I love him and that’s all there is to it. We have our own thing going on and I’m not the only one that [got the tattoos]. I’ll tell you that. [Laughs] I’m just the only one with it on my fingers”
Unfortunately, things didn’t work out and she had that tattoo crossed out soon after. His alleged tattoo (that he probably didn’t get) remains a mystery as he continues to date any and everybody.
Common and Taraji P Henson
If you read Common’s book, One Day It’ll All Make Sense, you probably learned that aside from having a relationship (a crazy one) with Erykah Badu, he tried to have a relationship with actress Taraji P. Henson. However, it was just a bad time. He had just lost his friend/roommate and producer, J Dilla, and he just wasn’t in a place to fully give himself emotionally to someone else. The two would later speak on the fact that they did indeed date after the book came out (Henson admitted it on Wendy Williams), and we kind of wish that they would have lasted. They would have been a super cute couple.
Alanis Morissette and Ryan Reynolds
Can I just say that Ryan is in my top three for white boy crushes? Had the chance to see him up close at a press junket and he looks even better in person…Anywho, before he was married to Gossip Girl star Blake Lively, Reynolds was actually engaged to singer Alanis Morrisette. Reynolds and Morissette, both Canadian by the way, met at Drew Barrymore’s birthday soiree in 2002 and were engaged in 2004. But by 2007 with no walk down the aisle in sight, the couple announced that they were calling it quits. I wonder if when she sees pictures of Reynolds with Lively, if she starts to hum “You Oughta Know…”
Lamman Rucker and Jacque Reid
The uber fine actor and beautiful journalist allegedly dated at one time. If you can remember, around 2010, Reid was a regular and friend of rapper Pepa on the reality show, Let’s Talk About Pep. During one episode, Rucker came on and was described as Reid’s ex, but the two had gone on to be good friends despite all that. I guess they were hellas of tight because Reid even considered asking him to have a baby with her since that biological clock was ticking. Of course, that didn’t happen, but we wouldn’t be mad at her if it did. He’s fine!
Christina Milian and Jamie Foxx
After the end of her lengthy relationship with Nick Cannon in 2005, there were rumors swirling that Milian bounced back from her heartbreak with Jamie Foxx of all people. As HipHopDX put it, “Yep, after she dumped Nick Cannon she got with an older man with more experience and frankly Jamie Foxx is looking fly nowadays!” I guess…
The two singers with an appreciation for acting were seen getting extremely close at multiple parties during that time. And while Milian looked like she was having fun, things didn’t turn into anything serious with Foxx. Besides, she was tired of messing with actors and soon turned her sights to producers in the music industry…
Cree Summer and Kadeem Hardison
Throwback! Before he married and split with singer Chante Moore, Kadeem Hardison and Cree Summer were an item in the ’90s. Which is ironic since it seemed his chemistry with Jasmine Guy would have made something pop off there. But no, Hardison and Summer dated for a year while they were both working on A Different World. Though things didn’t work out, when Summer was later interviewed by People about Hardison, she had nothing but great things to say, claiming he was a “gentle, gentle man. Everyone who meets him falls in love with him.”
Rocsi Diaz and Raphael Saadiq
Before she was seen canoodling for a while with Eddie Murphy, who attended red carpet events with the media maven looking less than thrilled, Diaz was seen vacaying it up in early 2012 with singer/producer Raphael Saadiq. Diaz clearly has a thing for older men, preferably famous ones. She was seen with Saadiq in Miami sun-bathing, laying out, and jumping in the water. I would say that they were cute together, but this is just an odd situation. Do you though, boo! Either way, it was over before we knew it.
