What can we say? There’s no shortage of surprising celebrity boo-ship thanks to the Internet, and seeing as how you love to be informed of these things, we thought we’d keep sharing. But we have to say, these 11 couples (about 12 actually) even surprised us! Nia Long and Peter Thomas? Naomi and Mike Tyson? TJ and Chilli? We hope you’ll be just as surprised as we were. If not…*Kanyeshrug* Enjoy!
Lenny Kravitz and Nicole Kidman
After her much publicized split with actor Tom Cruise, it was pretty safe to say that Nicole Kidman was open to trying new things, including black men. In 2003, this short relationship all started when Kidman was said to be renting Lenny Kravitz’s apartment. Then all of a sudden, the two started showing up at events together looking all bohemian chic and shy walking away from paparazzi. Kidman’s spokeswoman was even a tad bit in the dark about their blooming relationship when she responded to questions from People: “They’re very close,” says her spokeswoman Leslee Dart. “He’s very important to her. Beyond that, I don’t know.” Can’t say they were the best fit for one another, because from an outside view the Australian actress and the black Jewish (half-Jewish) rockstar don’t seem to have all that much in common, but he has to be the best rebound boo a girl can have. Damn!
Nicole Kidman and Q-Tip
But Lenny wasn’t the only chocolate fella that Nicole was checking for. Kidman dated rapper and “A Tribe Called Quest” frontman Q-Tip in the same year she got real close for comfort with Lenny Kravitz. And while many people speculated and others assumed the rumors weren’t true, Q-Tip has talked about their short relationship in the media a lot since they parted ways. During the listening party for his album The Renaissance in 2008, a particular Q&A question about the actress finally provided a straightforward answer:
“Of course, this being star central, you couldn’t only ask Q-Tip about music. One question almost ended his impromptu Q&A session. Did he really date Nicole Kidman? The puzzled rapper gave an “aw, come on” look and said, “I know this is Hollywood, and y’all got a penchant for [those kinds of questions]. Yes, I did. So what?”
Wale and Solange
Way back in 2009, Solange Knowles was rumored to be getting cozy with rapper, Wale. They were seen out and about together on their picnic steez (see above photo), and of course, Wale was more than geeked to talk about her in an interview with Honey magazine:
“I do love her. We’re friends. She’s amazing. She’s a good person. Any single mother contributing to society the way she does — I got a lot of love for them. She’s got to do a lot on her own and raise a young black man in this day and age, so my hat goes off to her. She’s definitely an anomaly. And the way she can do that and manage to do the same things that I complain about having to do.”
“Did you interview Solange about me? Did she smile when you mentioned my name?”
Though he was enamored with Bey’s little sister, he couldn’t get his Keith Sweat on and make it last forever. She’s happily with director Alan Ferguson now.
Mayte Garcia and Tommy Lee
When you’ve been married to and made love to a man like Prince, can any other fella really suffice? I guess so when it comes to dancer/choreographer and now-reality star Mayte Garcia. After the pair formally divorced in 2000, Mayte went on to date rocker and drummer Tommy Lee (yes, Pamela Anderson’s ex-husband). And I don’t mean for just a hot second. The beauty dated the drummer from 2000 to 2002, and the two were even engaged. If you’re a fiend for the show “Hollywood Exes,” you might have already known this information, but if not, now you know!
Ryan Gosling and Sandra Bullock
Before he was a household name and before her Oscar win, Ryan Gosling was a pretty young thang getting very close with A-list lady Sandra Bullock. The two starred in the movie, Murder By Numbers, and it was at that time (circa 2002) that she began dating her co-star, who at the time, was 16 years younger than her (so when he was born, she was already in high school–creepy!). They were able to keep their relationship pretty quiet, and to this day, the actor has nothing but nice things to say about his ex (and his other ex, Rachel McAdams, from The Notebook): “I had two of the greatest girlfriends of all time. I haven’t met anybody who could top them.”
Naomi Campbell and Mike Tyson
You read correctly. At the beginning of her successful modeling career, the then 19-year-old actress used to swap spit with the Brownsville’s finest, Mike Tyson. According to Tyson’s old chauffeur though, their relationship was purely a sexual one, not too focused on a healthy emotional state, as Campbell was known for talking down and crazy to Tyson. The boxer spent a lot of money on the model and was, according to reports, the one who got the boxer decked out in Versace during the late ’80s, one of the designers that Campbell was famous for doing a lot of modeling work for back in the day. When asked what Tyson thought of the model back then, he was quoted as saying, “She has a great body. And she’s scared of nothing.” If she was messing with him, it’s safe to say that’s very true.
TJ Holmes and Chilli
The very handsome journalist and TV personality (and now host of the new BET program, “Don’t Sleep”) dated the former TLC singer around the time that he was getting divorced from his first wife, a high school sweetheart. For those who were wondering, Holmes, first name Loutelious, has been married twice. Around the time they briefly dated, rumors swirled that Chilli got involved with him while he was still married, and to that, the singer said folks were dead wrong:
…let’s clear this up right now. T.J. Holmes was divorced and had been divorced. It wasn’t a situation where he was going through a divorce and still married. I would never date a man that is legally separated or tied to another woman. We dated, but it was brief. I’m a godly person and try to do all the things that God wants me to do. I have a conscience; I could never do that. Besides, I want to get married and present a healthy wonderful relationship for myself and my 11-year-old son.
Raye Dowell and Forest Whitaker
Okay, so if you aren’t a Spike Lee fan, this little tidbit of information probably means nothing to you. But the most recent Where Are They Now? pointed out that the actress from She’s Gotta Have It used to date and had a child with Academy Award winning actor Forest Whitaker (before Oscar came into his life of course). The young man’s name is Ocean Alexander Whitaker. Of course, nowadays we know that Whitaker is married to Keisha Nash, and they went on to have more beautiful babies with equally interesting names.
Raphael Saadiq and Joss Stone
What started off as a simple partnership to make great music together became a colorful love affair for the ages. Well, not really, but I always wanted to say that. It all started when Joss enlisted iconic musician and producer Raphael Saadiq of Tony! Toni! Toné! fame to help her put together her album. The two started working together to put together Introducing Joss Stone, and according to Saadiq, at that time, sparks began to fly. Even if it was for only for a short time. When asked to answer whether or not they actually were an item, he told Details, “Yeah, a little bit, a little bit. But she was more like a muse to me in the end.”
Cynthia Bailey and Russell Simmons
Aside from cutie actor Leon, gorgeous model Cynthia Bailey was also involved with hip-hip mogul Russell Simmons for a while. That’s right, before he was hitting the red carpet with a new model every other week, he was trying to cuff Bailey. He even proposed to the model—though she turned him down. On the show, she made it clear that while he was a lot of fun to date and kick it with, but he was indeed a cheater (even if he didn’t agree with her). To this day, he even calls her “Pretty muthaf****,” so here’s to hoping that you can call that a term of endearment…?
Nia Long and Peter Thomas
Speaking of Cynthia Bailey, remember back in the day when Nia Long used to date the gray-bearded brotha? True story. In an interview with People in 1997 it was pointed out that she was dating Thomas, who lived in Miami at the time of their relationship:
Her love life has been full too. Long, who once dated Washington Bullets star Chris Webber, now commutes between West Hollywood, where she shares a modest apartment with her black chow Onyx, and Miami, where current beau Peter Thomas, 35, owns a restaurant. “We’re best friends,” says Long. “It makes the love and passion that much better.”
Clearly Peter Thomas has some type of voodoo under his belt that we don’t know about, because the man attracts some of the best looking ladies doesn’t he?
Mya And Silk The Shocker
Sure, these two made beautiful (or decent) music together when they teamed up for “Movin’ On,” but Mya must have liked what the New Orleans rapper and brother of Master P had to offer, because after the fact, they had a relationship that lasted a few years and reportedly dated in 2002.
