Congratulations, you’ve made it to your final trimester! In between fighting acid reflux and the unbearable pressure on your bladder, one fun thing you have to look forward to is packing your hospital bag. There will be cute outfits for you and your little one for your newborn portraits, a book or two to get you through the contractions and your makeup bag so you can emerge from L&D looking snatched, right? Nope. After my c-section, I rocked a hospital gown and didn’t fill in my eyebrows for three days. I had a fully stocked makeup bag that went untouched. As a result, I looked a mess (and kind of felt a mess too), but my first pictures with my daughter didn’t look posed or forced, they looked real and truly captured a moment where nothing else mattered but my new family.

There are dozens of lists on the internet regarding packing the perfect hospital bag, but the last thing you want to pack is Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” or anything else that won’t see the light of day during your hospital stay. There were definitely some items that stayed at the bottom of my bag, as well as a few that I wished I had packed. Here are some tips for making sure you have what you need for yourself and your new baby in your hospital bag.
