Tracee Ellis Ross
Tracee Ellis Ross has so much in her life to be happy about, she’s on the hit TV show Black-ish, she’s a Golden Globe winner for her role on said show, she’s a fashionista, an aunt, daughter and friend. However, the only thing that mainstream media seems to focus on is that she’s single without children.
Ross has been very open about being single in Hollywood, and never hesitates to call out the often double standard between single men and women.
She previously told Glamour about her single status, saying:
“It’s really interesting to be a woman and to get to 45 and not be married and not have kids,” Ross told the audience. Even though she’s killing it in many ways—“I’m a good friend, a solid daughter, a hard worker, my credit is good, I take out the garbage before it gets smelly, I recycle, and I won a Golden Globe! As if all that I have done and who I am doesn’t matter.”
Ross also said that she’s decided, “I’m going to pay attention to the reality of my life and the audacity of my dreams instead of the expectation I was raised with.”
Actress Regina Hall has a natural way of lighting up the screen in any role she takes on, filling audiences with pure entertainment from her appearances in such films as Girls Trip, Think Like A Man and The Hate U Give.
You would think that with her long career and considerable accolades, that would be more than enough to keep fans and the media from delving into her personal life as a single, successful black woman–but sadly it’s not.
Hall discussed dating in the public eye and what type of relationship she sees in her future, in an interview with ESSENCE:
“I’ve gone through breakups before in the public eye, and it’s hard to tell friends, then it’s the failure of a relationship. I look forward to a fruitful partnership, meaning that I [don’t] have to go into the typical, traditional marriage. Like Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. And partnership can obviously mean marriage but that we both come to be partners in like the storms of life.”
Regina King is one of the few former child stars that managed to do the impossible, escape the awkward childhood years and leap into adult roles without any scandal along the way. You name it, King has done it, while making it look easy. As soon as she finishes up one award-winning performance, she’s on to the next.
The If Beale Street Could Talk star and Academy Award nominee is on a major career upswing that admittedly leaves her little time for dating. She addressed her preoccupation with her career causing her love life to suffer, while speaking to talk show host Wendy Williams.
“You know, I need to do a better job at it. I’ve been so busy with work and my girlfriends are like, ‘Do you think a man is just gonna go knock on the door, like, ‘I’m here!’?’ And I think I wish he would, but I have to make that more of a priority.”
When you are the greatest and most fierce supermodel of all time you can certainly have your pick of anyone you like, and perhaps that’s why Naomi Campbell has chosen to remain single for so long.
If you know anything about the runway assassin, you know that she has standards as high as her heels, so despite being rumored to date some of the biggest names in Hollywood throughout the years, Campbell has yet to commit to anyone long-term as it relates to marriage.
In any 2017 interview, Campbell admitted that she would someday love to be a mother and that she wants to go the traditional route in raising a child, complete with a father figure.
“I think about having children all the time. But now with the way science is I think I can do it when I want. I do want a father figure. I think it’s important.”
In a separate interview, Campbell stressed that when or if she has children, it will be on her terms, not anyone else’s:
“But I think I’ll have children, everyone thinks I’ll be a good mother. I’ve always considered it. I’ll just do it when I’m ready. I’m not rushing to anyone’s drumbeat, I’m going to my own.”
Vivica A. Fox
Fan favorite actress Vivica A. Fox is the definition of a hustler, always managing to land on her feet with new projects to maintain her well-deserved relevance in the ever-changing landscape of Hollywood.
She’s been married, dated fellow celebs and has the stories to tell to prove it, but she maintains her singlehood on her terms without feeding into the media pressure that often likes to negatively portray single women of a certain age.
Fox has previously stated that she is “happily single” and that the cougar way of life is definitely not for her:
“I am very happily single but actively looking. I am being patient this time. The biggest problem I’ve probably had is I’ve dated body parts for way too long. Now, I’m just trying to make sure I meet someone who is a partner and someone who I won’t wake up next to in the morning and say, ‘What the f**k are you still doing here. “I don’t want to be someone’s sugar mama. I want for someone to take care of me.”
Before she was even old enough to drive, singer/actress Brandy was already an idol to a throng of young girls, courtesy of her melodic voice, girl-next-door-charm and hit ’90s TV show Moesha.
Brandy married in her early twenties, but has remained mostly single since that union ended several years ago. She hasn’t let that stop her from pushing forward in her career, as she is now a regular on the FOX hit series Star. The media and many of Brandy’s fans may want her to live out the fairy-tale and get married again, but she’s perfectly happy being single and doing her own thing.
In 2016, Brandy broke down her relationship expectations, so that there would be no confusion:
“I’m so satisfied being…being by myself. I love it. I’ve never taken this much time on myself. I don’t date. I haven’t been on a date in like a year. I just like me right now. I just like the way it feels being by myself and taking care of my daughter and just doing my thing. I’m all about my career right now. I don’t. I don’t want to go down that [marriage] road… I know I don’t want to.”
Actress Sanaa Lathan has been a regular fixture of Black Hollywood for practically 20 years and during that time, she has delivered some beloved and memorable performances in films like Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar and The Best Man.
Despite being regularly linked to the who’s who of celebrity men, Lathan has remained single throughout the years and has repeatedly stated that she will entertain marriage when she is ready, not because of societal standards.
During a recent interview, Lathan discussed her relationship preferences:
“I always wanted [to get married]—and I dream about having—a life partner, but I am completely happy, and I love my freedom. I do date, but I do not want anything less than something that’s amazing. And if it’s not gonna be that, I’m just gonna keep being my free-spirit self. I was talking to a friend of mine who’s around my age, and there is a thing when people look at you, and they’re like, “So…” as if you’re failing because you’re not married. I have so much love in my life. And maybe I will have a life partner. But I don’t know.”
Tyra Banks is the perfect example that women can do it all…flawlessly. The supermodel turned mogul has her hands in so many different endeavors, it’s difficult to keep track. From her long-running reality show America’s Next Top Model to films like the 2018 follow-up film Life-Size 2 and hosting America’s Got Talent, Banks is one of the busiest women in Hollywood.
Never letting her busy career stop her from achieving certain milestones, Banks, who always wanted to be a mother, welcomed a son in 2017. However, she still hasn’t found that special man that she’d like to marry–and she’s okay with that.
While describing her co-parenting relationship with the father of her son, York, Banks previously stated this:
“We are co-parenting and doing such a great job raising him that I don’t have to do less. So it’s like this beautiful village around York. But I’m there every day.”
When you win an Academy Award for you very first film role after being rejected on the popular reality show American Idol, there’s really nothing you can’t do. That’s exactly the underdog spirit that has propelled singer/actress Jennifer Hudson in a long-standing career.
In the middle of her rise to the top, Hudson had a son, who many though would derail her career, and continued to push forward. Naturally, the media couldn’t wait to pressure her for explanations about her newly single status after she ended her 10-year engagement.
However, Hudson is mostly focused on being the best and most hands-on mom she can be to her son, David:
“As soon as I walk through the door of my house, I forget about everything on the outside. I’m on mommy time. When David was younger, he could travel with me everywhere, but now I want him to have a normal upbringing and a childhood with stability. [Being] a mom…really changes you and makes you think in that way… My mother was a very present mom, and I want to be the same for my son.”
Singer Ashanti was once apart of one of music’s hottest couples, but after that relationship ended she decided to keep her relationships private, since dealing with the abundance of rumors and gossip were too much for her to handle.
Without a doubt, Ashanti still has what it takes to secure the interest of anyone she chooses, but the public just won’t seem to let her live on her on terms and take her relationship status at her own pace.
Ashanti has spoken about being single many times before, stressing that she is happy and content regardless of the public perception that she’s not:
“I am happy because there is so much going on and now I can focus on what I need to focus on which is my career, my music and speaking to women very powerfully…. [Relationships are] a distraction. It’s kind of a distraction because it’s like, ‘Where are you? What time are you coming home?’ Alright, but I have to go to studio. Okay, but I’m going to. You know what I mean?”
One listen to Jill Scott’s long list of love songs, and you’ll be dreaming of finding a one true love of your own. She makes the kind of music that is the soundtrack to love’s purpose and promise, but that doesn’t mean she has to be in a current relationship herself.
Scott has dipped her toe into the marriage waters twice before, so it’s no surprise that she may be perfectly content to be single for awhile and take some much-needed time for herself…if only the public would allow her do it in peace.
After the demise of her second marriage, Scott made it clear to her fans what she won’t tolerate in an effort to be in a relationship:
“Note – Your standards are not everyone else’s. I won’t do Uncle Daddies – the ones that call every now and then; who see their children a few times a year. THAT is one I just don’t respect. Lack of respect is a dry bobby. I prefer a juicy existence. Ya dig? Or someone who is disrespectful to their parents. Nor can I do broke/broken yet comfortable. Nah. Write YOUR list. Sometimes it’s better to know what you don’t want.”
Mary J. Blige
Legendary singer Mary J. Blige is regal in every sense of the word, which is why her given moniker, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, fits her so well. She has given women endless anthems for the better part of 25 years now, and still looks amazing while doing it.
Never one to shy away from discussing her relationships issues through music, Blige, in many ways is that musical therapy we all need, whether we’re going through it or happy in it. After dealing with an incredibly nasty divorce, Blige is rightfully cautious when it comes to dating, but the Queen can handle it.
In a recent interview, Blige discussed her current dating life and offered some helpful tips:
“Treasure yourself. Like, wait. Don’t give it away so fast. Make them wait forever for it. All of it. Just have confidence in yourself and they’ll see it in you. They’ll treat you like that. But if you’re not confident, they’ll treat you like that. I do know. Being a single woman it’s like, ‘back to keeping it all to myself.’ Don’t just give it to anybody.”
When you’ve been in the game as long as singer Mya has and managed to keep your dating life relatively under the radar, the pressed media (and even nosey fans) will make it their mission to find out who you’re dating and why you’re still single.
Mya has always relished in living a low-key life, even though she has had her share of celebrity flings. However, she much prefers to date who she wants, when she wants and if that includes marriage and children, great, if not, she’s happy either way.
In a 2018 interview, Mya revealed that she has always respected her privacy while relationships:
“I’ve had two boyfriends in the industry. Like, relationships. But I never say names because I respect my relationships and what we’ve gone through…people have linked me to a lot of people, but people also project what they want to see for you.”
“My intention has always been love and connection with a person beyond anything else. I’ve been so private because I didn’t want it to make or break me or to be a public stunt. I’ve really fired a lot of managers that had that mindset or publicists that had that mindset of, ‘Oh, you need to go on a date with this person because it’s going to help album sales.’ No thank-you. That’s not my flow. I don’t like it. I understand it from that perspective. … I am single. Focused. Celibate.”
The ever-funny Tiffany Haddish had a meteoric rise to stardom after her scene-stealing performance in the 2017 hit film Girls Trip, Naturally, with fame comes the constant and intrusive examination into your personal life, and Haddish finding herself continuously fielding questions about her single status and dating life.
Previously married, Haddish opted to refocus her energy on her career after her divorce instead of dating–and the results have certainly paid off. She’s at the top of her game and she doesn’t need to be apart of a couple to enjoy her success.
Nevertheless, Haddish has hilariously described what she’s looking for in a mate and her readiness to venture outside of singlehood:
“I’m tired of being single. I’m looking to start dating now. And, you know, I have some requirements. You got to be like 25 and over, not currently in jail. ‘Cause I don’t know how they get cell phones, but…anyways.”
