When the holiday season approaches, aside from concerns about menus, gifts and decor, there is the overwhelming question of whether or not you’re finally going to bring your significant other home to meet your family.

If you’ve been dating someone special for a significant period of time, chances are your family (especially the elders) is clamoring to meet them. But such a big step in a relationship can be a deal-breaker, so you definitely want to make sure your guy is worthy — and ready — for an introduction. Here are a few signs it’s time to bring bae home.

He Actually Wants To Meet Your Family

This is key. Many times women can practically force their guy into meeting their family before they’re ready and in the end it never works out for anyone. However, if your man has actually expressed interest in meeting your family, it may be time to bring him home.

If he already wants to meet them then there is less chance that he will be awkward around them or say something that he shouldn’t. Let him express to you his readiness (or not) to meet the fam, and go from there.

You’re In A Committed Relationship

If you’re not in a committed relationship then there is no need to be worried about bringing him home. A commitment signals that things are serious, so serious that you two are only focused on each other and perhaps family introductions are next on the to-do list of your relationship.

Besides, once you’re committed he’s going to have to meet your family at some point, and there is no better time than during the holiday season when everyone is in an especially festive and welcoming mood.

You Know Your Family Would Love Him

There’s no getting around dealing with your family’s opinion of who you’re dating, but if you already know how much they would love your boo once they’ve met, then it may be time to make a trip home together.

When he has all the qualities that your family will swoon over and you have no doubt that he will make a great first impression, bringing him home for the holidays is less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone.

He Talks About A Future With You

There are many ways to tell if a man is serious about you, but none are as direct as if he regularly speaks about future plans with you. Talking about homes, kids and growing old together is his way of letting you know that you’re the one he’s thinking about for the long haul.

If this actually is the relationship track he’s on, then introducing him to your family should be a no-brainer. This is also a good way to see how he would be in the future at other family gatherings.

He’s Already Met Your Parents

Meeting your extended family is one thing, but meeting your parents is another. Meeting the parents is one of the most stressful things that couples face and doing it for the first time with the rest of your family around may be a bit too much to handle.

Try to introduce your boo to your parents separately before he meets everyone else. This takes the pressure off and allows him to relax and enjoy the evening instead of being nervous about how your parents feel about him…in addition to everyone else.

You’ve Met His Family

Now it’s his turn. Once you’ve met his family and everything went smoothly (hopefully) it’s now time for him to do the same. To keep him calm about such a big introduction, don’t relay to him all the horror stories about how the men in your family are so hard on new guys.

Instead, let him know how much you love him and that they’ll likely do the same. You’ve faced your turn at bat and came out unscathed, let him hopefully do the same.

You’ve Shared Your Family Drama With Him

Sigh. This is a big one. If you are at the point in your relationship where you are so comfortable with each other that you’ve shared your family drama and the relationship survived, then he is certainly worthy to bring home.

However, be sure to let him know that although you’ve shared your family drama with him, he doesn’t need to repeat what you’ve shared while meeting your family for the first time.

You’re Ready To Make New Holiday Memories With Him

One of the best things about being in a relationship is all of the memories you get to make together as a couple and there is no better time to make said memories than during the holidays.

If all goes well and your family loves him, this could be the start of a new memory in which he visits your family annually and everyone simply enjoys the moment.

You’ll Miss Him If He’s Not Around

We’ve all been there. You’re at a family function and all you can think about is your boo and wishing that he was there with you.

An easy way to combat this feeling is to just invite him to come along, but you have to be sure that the timing is right. If you know that you’re finally ready for everyone else to find out why your guy is so awesome, then stop missing him and show him off instead.

You Know He’s “The One”

It’s just that simple. You know in your heart that he is “the one,” the last man you ever hope to be with. When your feelings are this strong, introducing him to your family is the next step in making things official.

Although, you want to make sure that these feelings aren’t one-sided. You need to know that he views you the same way and you’re both on the same relationship track of serious commitment.
