A recent speech by a German Harvard professor has the internet shooketh.

According to Dr. Karin Michels, who doubly serves as a professor at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and director of the Institute for Prevention and Tumour Epidemiology at the University of Freiburg, coconut oil is “one of the worst foods you can eat,” and also claimed it was “pure poison.”

Social media erupted over the reveal, citing that health experts go back and forth forbidding foods to only retract their statements later. Others said the statement was pure propaganda.

Michels went viral after her speech from last month picked up steam.  In the video, Michels is seen speaking at the University of Freiburg, noting the “damaging effects” of the saturated fats in the oil’s makeup–which according to Michel, are more harmful than lard.

Last year the American Heart Association updated their advisement on coconut oil, relaying that individuals should consume unsaturated fats instead of saturated fats in order to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

To date the comments section on Michel’s YouTube video has been disabled, but still has over 1 million views.

Health guru’s have hailed coconut oil as a superfood, doting on its miraculous healing powers. We’re wondering about the usage of coconut oil in health and beauty products as well. Because if it’s harmful to digest, it can’t be good to use for your skin and hair.
