There is no such thing as “perfect” emotional maturity.
Often in life, we learn the rewarding lesson that when we stop caring what others think we start to enjoy ourselves and find success much more. But that can be a particularly difficult philosophy to live by for those struggling with mental health or emotional matters.
It can be so difficult to admit that you have dedicated possibly several years if not more than a decade and so much energy to what turned out to be the wrong career for you. You feel it in your bones. You were not put on this planet to do this thing. But, it can be easier to stick it out, because you came this far. You think maybe you will just spend your whole life at a job you don’t like rather than shock everyone, quit, and start from the bottom at something new.
When a man cries in front of you, do not point out the crying. Just don’t do it. Hug him. Talk him through it. But do not tell him how much it means to you that he feels comfortable crying in front of you—it’s that very comment that will make him uncomfortable doing so in the future. Act as if crying is the most natural, normal thing in the world—a non-issue, really. And do that by not even mentioning it
I can struggle to set boundaries. And people will encroach on my boundaries a lot—they can sense that I’m an empath and won’t stop them. Rather than thinking of my own needs, I just think of how much this person needs me and why they’re crossing a boundary. I make excuses for the person.
If you aren’t facing everything in your own mind, then it’s easier for other people to manipulate you. The better you understand your own fears and insecurities, the less other people can prey on them.
Sign up for a class where you won’t know anybody and don’t ask a friend to sign up with you. Just go, as a solo student, to a class where you can learn about something you’ve been wanting to learn about. The empowering feeling of educating yourself will be stronger than the fear of going alone.
