Pink just released her seventh studio album, Beautiful Trauma, and it’s set to be the biggest album debut on the charts by a woman this year. That’s major. It’s clear that Pink is one of the biggest artists out today, but back in the day, she was just another singer trying to prove herself.
In 2000, she released her debut studio album, Can’t Take Me Home, which featured hits like “There You Go” and “You Make Me Sick,” which had an R&B sound. While embracing that sound (which has since changed drastically), the singer attended the Soul Train Awards in 2000 and tried to shoot her shot with the Queen of Hip Hop & R&B music, Mary J. Blige. It didn’t go as planned.

“I went in her trailer a long time ago, I think it was when I hosted the Lady of Soul Train or Soul Train Awards,” the now 38-year-old star told the hosts of SiriusXM’s Morning Mashup recently. “I walked into her trailer and I was like, ‘Hi, would you ever work with me?’ She just took one look at me and she goes, ‘No’. I go, ‘OK! I love you, Mary! I’ll see you again!'”
Despite the fact that MJB turned down the offer, Pink wasn’t upset. Instead, she appreciated the fact that instead of trying to string her along, she just kept it 100 percent honest.
“That’s what I love about her,” she said. “I respect it, because so many people will be like, ‘Yeah, call me!'”
She did see Blige again obviously. She actually stood on stage with rapper T.I. and awarded Blige a Grammy for Best Female R&B in 2007, performed with her among other big stars at the Billboard Awards in 2001 and they were both Viva Glam campaign spokeswomen for MAC around the same time.
While they didn’t get the chance to collaborate, we’re sure the respect is mutual. And hey, never say never…
