Being the child of someone in the public eye isn’t easy. People are always watching you, there are high expectations of you, and even adults can be vicious when it comes to critiquing everything from your personality to your looks. Add to that the normal stress of adolescence and it can be very hard to build your confidence as a young man or woman. But for Cori Broadus, the 17-year-old daughter of Snoop Dogg and Shante Broadus, she’s shaking off the negativity and embracing her beauty. This is important considering that the teen grew up “despising” her skin color due to the messages she was getting from society:

Gorgeous! Shante, who is pursuing her own career in the music industry as a singer, is one tough cookie. Not only has she been able to move past what society dictates as beautiful, but she’s also managed to stay strong through a long battle with lupus. When speaking on Cori’s resilience to PEOPLE a few years ago, Snoop Dogg said it was something he greatly admired about his youngest child.

“She’s the toughest little thing I’ve ever met,” he said. “She’s on the honor roll, playing volleyball and softball, living life. She has all this joy. In the beginning lupus was winning. But now Cori is.”
