You know you have words that make little lights go off in your head when you see them on a guy’s online dating profile: patient, social, ambitious…

Describing oneself is hard and you have to choose just the right words that show you’re self-aware enough, but you don’t sit around contemplating your own personality all day. You want to pick adjectives that depict you in a good light but don’t sound like you’re bragging. You want traits that show you have a dynamic personality! But that can quickly verge on split personality if you go overboard. And, finally, you just don’t want to use that many words. So words that encompass several other words are always helpful. Without realizing it, men are analyzing your profile and the ways you choose to describe yourself just as intensely as you are. Here are some buzzwords women should include in their online dating profile, and some not to include..

Include: Educated

Educated is just a fact. If you have attended educational institutes then you are educated! You’re not saying you’re a brainiac or a genius. You are just letting people know there is a certain level of knowledge and poise they can expect from you.

Don’t include: Intellectual

That sounds pretentious. It also sounds like all you ever want to do is wear hats and sit in coffee shops and debate politics.

Include: Caring

This elicits the all-wondrous maternal image that men seek out (at least a little) in every woman. It doesn’t say you’re overbearing or a worrier. It just says if there is a problem, you care about trying to help fix it.

Don’t include: Passionate

People who call themselves passionate are usually a little intense. Everyone is passionate, naturally! But not everybody feels the need to state it. Self-proclaimed passionate people tend to stir up issues that weren’t even there, rather than just try to help issues that naturally arise.

Include: Fun-loving

Fun-loving is just the right balance between being the wild party girl and being someone who likes to watch from the sidelines. You’re up for a good time—you appreciate one—but you don’t need constant action.

Don’t include: A partier

The moment you write partier men think that partying is your life. They think you’re online shopping all week for the next perfect club dress. They think you’re usually hung over. Yeah—people can be judgmental.

Include: Laughs easily

To say you laugh easily says that it’s important to you to find the humor in things. It also shows that you don’t need to be the clown—that you’re happy to listen to other people’s jokes and stories.

Don’t include: Funny

Even if you are funny, once you state you’re funny, you have a lot to live up to. Plus, it makes men think you’re constantly joking and can’t ever have a serious conversation. Humor is subjective anyways, so you really can’t say that you’re funny to everybody. I know I’m not—I may have even just pissed you off!

Include: Patient

Patient makes you sound like you’re fair, reasonable and level-headed. Patient even indicates that you are aware people, and circumstances can be screwed up, but you practice patience. Patience is, after all, something you have to practice. It doesn’t just happen. It shows self-discipline.

Don’t include: Chill

Chill sounds like you don’t care about anything. Chill sounds like you are definitely not passionate ever. Chill sounds like you live on the beach. Not in a beach house—on the beach.

Include: A free thinker

Being a free thinker just means you’re not judgmental, and you don’t apply preconceived ideas or notions to new people and situations. You think for yourself. You’re not afraid of new scenarios.

Don’t include: Open-minded

To men, this just reads as, “Down for a threesome.”

To be ambitious means you want to accomplish things in life! These things could be related to family, they could be related to work, they could be related to self-discovery! Being ambitious just means you want to make the most of your time on this earth.

Don’t include: Career-oriented

This sounds like you never leave the house without a briefcase, you’ll take work calls during Valentine’s Day dinners, and trying to get you to take a vacation will be impossible. He’ll figure out that you care about your career; you don’t need to announce it.

Include: Happy

Who doesn’t want to hang out with somebody who is happy? To say you’re happy is to say that you love yourself, and you’re happy with your life with our without somebody—you’d just like somebody to complement your life, rather than make it.
