When celebrity divorce news ends up making headlines, sometimes the fans aren’t the only ones surprised. These celebrities said that they were under the impression that their marriages were doing just fine — until they heard about their split because papers were filed.
We know that celebrity schedules can be very busy. But these men and women deserved a little more than just a warning before their partners decided to break the news to the world that they were on the way out the door.

When news of Mechelle and Mike Epps’s split hit the headlines, Mechelle said it was news to her — and “shocking” because she and her husband were together as late as last month. She wasn’t sure it was really over until she saw paparazzi photos of the man she thought was still her husband walking down the streets of New York City with another woman.
Hulk Hogan found out that his ex-wife, Linda Hogan, was leaving when he got a call from a reporter — who wanted comments on the divorce. Hogan said he thanked the reporter for the “great information” about the end of his 24-year marriage before hanging up the phone.
Tiki Barber said that he was “blindsided” when his pregnant wife Ginny Barber publicly filed for divorce — even though his affair with Traci Lynn Johnson had been public for weeks.
Barber said he was under the impression that he and his ex-wife were going to wait to file until after their twin babies were born. He married Johnson shortly after the divorce was finalized.
Britney Spears’s ex-husband said he knew they had problems but was under the impression that they were still working them out. But in 2006, she “went behind my back and filed [for divorce]. [I was] completely blindsided… she didn’t even talk to me or anything.”

Melissa Etheridge’s ex Tammy Lynn Michaels said she and Melissa Etheridge had talked about ending their 9-year partnership but agreed not to make any moves before Etheridge got back home from her tour.
But Etheridge announced their divorce anyway, prompting Michaels to leave this bitter poem on her blog:

Even though he was the subject of several cheating rumors, rocker Gavin Rossdale still thought Gwen Stefani was going to agree to work things out. Rossdale was reportedly blindsided by the news that it was really the last straw when Stefani filed papers.
Porsha Williams told Andy Cohen that her sister had to call her and tell her that her divorce news was all over Twitter. Stewart was so surprised that she thought it was a “crazy joke.” Why? Because she was still living with Kordell Stewart at the time. When her attorney confirmed the news, Williams said she was heartbroken: “When I got married, I meant it for life.”
A week before news that Katie Holmes had filed for divorce hit, Tom Cruise was gushing to People magazine about how much he loved spending time with her. Cruise was “deeply saddened” to learn of the divorce — from the tabloids.
Nicole Kidman said that Tom Cruise blindsided her when he ended their marriage. Kidman told DuJour magazine, “(I thought) our life together was perfect. It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system.”

Sometimes celebrities and fans find out divorce news together. Shahs of Sunset star Mike Shouhed said he found out about his divorce from Jessica Parido when he checked his phone during one of their fights.
“I didn’t even know the divorce was happening until I saw it posted online. That was how I found out she was divorcing me. I was blindsided.”
Football legend Terry Bradshaw was so surprised by his wife’s divorce filing that he told the Daily News that he refused to “accept her claim that it’s over.” The two did go to counseling to try to save the marriage, but things officially came to an end more than three years later.
