When my children were toddlers I started holiday traditions in an attempt to further strengthen our family bond, pride, and cohesiveness. In large part, my intentions were to build a foundation that my kids could not only look back on and appreciate, but that they could also pass down to their future families.
Heirlooms were a very foreign concept in my family growing up, so I decided to select some personal items that hold a great deal of meaning and importance; things that would be timeless.

The term originated with the historical principle of an heirloom in English law, a chattel which by immemorial usage was regarded as annexed by inheritance to a family estate. Loom originally meant a tool. Such genuine heirlooms were almost unknown by the beginning of the twentieth century.
As I started to look at my possessions I decided – you don’t have to wait until you’re dead and gone to pass things on. I have a few pieces of jewelry that I’ve set aside to give to my daughter when she gets married, as well as a beautiful curio cabinet that she’ll be given when she moves into her first home. For my son, he will get my prized record collection, along with my most precious swords.
