Is there always smoke where there’s fire? Lots of celebrity women have been accused of being gay. Some have come out, some are more comfortable in the closet and some have said you’re way off base. Still, that hasn’t stopped the speculation from running wild when it comes to these ladies.
Queen Latifah
Fans have been questioning Queen Latifah’s sexuality since her U.N.I.T.Y. days but she’s always insisted on staying quiet about her private life. Recent pictures of her on vacation with a mystery woman suggest that she may have come out without making an announcement.
Jennifer Hudson
When J-Hud performed Same Love at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, rumors started circulating that maybe the singer was trying to tell us something. But Jennifer says that those rumors are nothing but idle gossip:
“If someone ever questions or thinks that, I don’t care what you think. It shouldn’t matter. And I did get that! People were like, ‘Is Jennifer trying to tell us something?’ Hey, I wasn’t, but if you wanna think that, it’s all right with me. When I got the call (to do that performance), I was like, ‘Oh my god, I definitely wanna do this. A powerful statement is being made and I wanna be a part of that.’”
Kerry Washington
Before she married Nnamdi Asomugha and had his baby, the rumor mill worked overtime suggesting that never-seen-dating Kerry Washington was doing her Scandal acting from inside the closet.
Janelle Monae
The pants suits, close-cropped do’s and a few suggestive lyrics from her album Electric Lady has some Janelle Monae fans wondering if she’s trying to out herself with a series of clues.
But Janelle told PrideSource that she had no idea that there were rumors that she was gay although she’s cool if there are: “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being gay or lesbian or straight or black or green or purple, so I’m OK with that.”
Erica Mena
Love and Hip Hop New York star Erica Mena is the only one on this list accused of not being a lesbian. When she started dating Cyn Santana just as LLHNY ratings were dropping, a lot of fans cried foul and accused Erica of pretending to play for the other team for the ratings.
Raven Symone
When rumors started swirling that maybe the Cosby Show star preferred women over men, she brushed off the accusation by saying her business was hers alone.
But when the government legalized marriage in Rhode Island and Minnesota, Raven released this Tweet and walked right on out of the closet: “I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you”
Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj may be the only one on this list to sort of start rumors about her sexuality on her own. Nicki loves to talk about how much she loves breasts and signs them at every opportunity. But now that she’s engaged, those playful rumors have ceased.
Keyshia Cole
Keyshia Cole’s recent single “SHE” had her fans wondering if it wasn’t really about a girl-on-girl encounter that might have been partially responsible for her split with Boobie.
But Keyshia says the lyrics were intentionally misleading:
“I had to get familiar with myself so I think that song is really, in essence of what that song ‘SHE’ is about. It’s getting to know yourself. I know people think it’s about girl-on-girl action, which it was at first, and then I kinda switched the lyrics around a lil bit.”
Hillary Clinton
On a recent episode of The View, Jenny McCarthy wondered aloud if Hillary Clinton is a lesbian with mistresses just like her husband Bill. Now we’re wondering if the Clintons are happily married or happy in their arrangement.
Sandra Bullock
Shortly after her split with Jesse James, rumor had it that Sandra Bullock was secretly a lesbian and that Jesse James was going to add insult to injury by outing her in his tell-all memoir. But no such tattle-telling happened and we’re pretty sure that Sandra plays for the home team.
Ellen Page
Before she came out of the closet, actress Ellen Page was flooded with questions about her sexuality. For years she stuck to “mums the word” but earlier this year at the LGBT youth conference in Las Vegas, Page finally came out saying “I am tired of hiding, I’m tired of lying by omission.”
Michelle Rodriguez
Sometimes the answer to “are you a lesbian” isn’t so cut and dry. Action star Michelle Rodriguez was accused of being gay for years. And in 2006 she told Cosmopolitan that she was wasn’t a lesbian but had “experimented with both sexes.”
Jada Pinkett Smith
Not even a 17 year marriage to a man can keep you safe from rumors that you’re gay. Right after Jada’s show Hawthorne was cancelled, rumor was that Marc Anthony left the show because Jada was having an affair with his wife J-Lo. This just added fuel to longstanding rumors that Will Smith is gay and Jada is his beard.
But all Jada said in response was, “Will and I know the truth. We’re waiting peacefully for the storm to blow over.”
Tichina Arnold
When Tichina Arnold heard the rumors that she was gay, she said it finally let her know that she was a “real celebrity”:
“You’re not a celebrity until…you’ve had a gay rumor. I’ve been around gays, transgenders and transsexuals. I accept people for whom and what they are. Everybody says you’re guilty by association. What do I have to be guilty about? I know lesbians. My friends are my friends and I don’t give a damn what people think.”
Angel Rae Robinson
Not long after Porsha Williams hinted that Kordell Stewart’s sexual preferences were getting in the way of their happy marriage, Kordell debuted his new boo Angel Rae Robinson. Almost immediately, stans called them both beards covering up for eachother’s closeted sexuality. But both Kordell and Angel Rae say she’s 100% straight.
