Has your inner goddess been a little too subdued lately? Have you found you’ve been keeping quiet to keep the peace in your relationships, friendships and career, but later kick yourself for not speaking up? These 14 TV women can help you get your sass back, and then some!
Barbara from “The New Adventures of Old Christine”
When Christine, the main character in this show, desperately needed cash to keep her women-only gym stay afloat, Barb got on board as her business partner to save her business. Later, Christine ends up marrying Barb so that she won’t be deported. We love Barb’s gusto for life—on board for an impromptu business decision to help a friend and even an impromptu gay wedding to stay in a city she loves!
Samantha from “Sex and the City”
No list about sassy women would be complete without Samantha. She’s got an enormous sex drive and isn’t afraid to show it, and because of it, she does a great job weeding out the boys who want a pushover woman and finds the men who can handle her grab-life-by-the-you-know-what attitude. Plus, her wardrobe is incredible.
Lt. Anita Van Buren from “Law & Order”
Lt. Anita Van Buren starts out on “Law & Order” as a crime victim, but eventually climbed her way to being one of the top crime fighters in what was mostly a man’s world. Van Buren even has bragging rights for being the longest running character in the history of “Law & Order”—they just couldn’t get enough of her no-nonsense but somehow-still-warm character.
Tara from “True Blood”
Let’s just say it: Tara is always cleaning up other character’s messes and her intuition is almost always spot on! She’s rejected by men she pines after and thrown into situations she didn’t ask for, but she never loses her cool. And she literally kicks a**, like all of the time.
Olivia Pope from “Scandal”
Do they really make women this sharp in real life? Olivia will have solved someone’s political crisis and put another person in their place before we even realize what happened during the commercial break on “Scandal.” And she looks fly while at it.
Dr. Miranda Bailey from “Grey’s Anatomy”
Alright, so her character is referred to as “The Nazi” by her interns, but we like that Dr. Bailey combats the rumor that female bosses can be pushovers! In a field in which tough decisions have to be made every minute, Dr. Bailey handles her job pretty seamlessly, and doesn’t back down from her standards in the workplace, even though it earns her some less-than-pleasant nicknames.
Sookie from “Gilmore Girls”
Don’t we all miss this show? Sookie was often the much-needed figurative — and even literal — slap in the face to the usually love-torn main character. She shamelessly states what she wants, and takes enormous pride in her work as a chef. She never once complains about her plus-size figure and lands herself an adorable husband!
Mindy from “The Mindy Project”
We love Mindy because she embraces her crazy! So many women today are afraid to be too “girly” but she’s not ashamed to admit she loves sample sales, trashy reality shows, and lots and lots of ice cream when she’s depressed. She even makes a few guys see how utterly adorable a woman can be who doesn’t try to be “cool.”
Mercedes from “Glee”
It’s not always easy being surrounded by cheerleaders (or girls with such tiny figures, they may as well be cheerleaders) but Mercedes stands her ground just fine. She refuses to be a back-up singer, and demands the spotlight. She’s a total diva-in-training, and we love that confidence!
Gloria from “Modern Family”
Gloria is reminded constantly that she is a total babe and plenty of moms would shy away from that spotlight, but she has fun with her curves and her glamour! She has no problem letting men admire her for her looks, while still having confidence that her strong character is just as visible.
Sophia from “Orange is the New Black”
We have to applaud anyone who feels so strongly about their role in this world as a woman that they don’t let the fact that they entered it as a man stop them. Sophia’s character on this highly appraised prison show is sometimes the only stable, warm and sane presence in the midst of chaos. And she always has her hair done, to boot.
Martha from “Doctor Who”
Martha Jones could easily be a scientist, a detective and a preschool teacher: her character is sharp, perceptive, and assertive, but somehow still so compassionate. She seriously challenges the “Madonna-whore” complex.
Karen from “Will & Grace”
Okay realistically, it might be dizzying to live in such a moral grey area as Karen does, with her husband whom she almost admits daily she’s only with for the money. But man does she know how to talk her way out of trouble, and how to talk her way in to fully-booked luxury spas and restaurants. And she’s friends with every high society designer/artist/club-owner/you-name-it. Sounds fun to us!
Florence from “The Jeffersons”
Florence began as only a part-time character on this memorable sitcom, but she brought so much great energy to the show, she eventually moved right into Mr. Jefferson’s home, so we could hear her quick-witted replies to cranky Mr. Jefferson and her random gems of wisdom nearly every episode.
