Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on January 9, 1914 by three black male students. A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown were the founders who stood behind the Greek letters which represent brotherhood, scholarship, and service. These brothers stand on the motto “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity,” and in celebration of 100 years of existence here are a few famous Sigmas you probably didn’t know.
Albert L. Roker, Jr. (Al)
Known for his bald head and good-natured attitude, TV broadcaster, actor, author and weather anchor for NBC’s Today show is proud to be an honorary Sigma.

A high profile civil rights advocate, Reverend Al Sharpton is also a minister, political and social justice activist, radio talk show host and president of National Action Network. He officially became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. on August 14, 2009 at 4:47 p.m. in Atlanta, GA.
Malik Yoba
Actor and singer Malik Yoba, known for his role on NY Undercover as Det. James “J.C.” Williams, is an honorary Sigma too.
Ellis Marsalis
Renowned jazz pianist, composer and patriarch of a musical family, including jazz greats Wynton and Bradford Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis crossed in the Epsilon Alpha chapter at Dillard University.
Blair Underwood
TV, film, and stage actor and director Blair Underwood is an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma.
Emmitt J. Smith, III
NFL Hall of Fame running back, Super Bowl Champion, former MVP, and “Dancing With The Stars” champion Emmitt Smith can also add Sigma to his numerous accolades. He crossed Zeta Kappa at the University of Florida.
Scottie Pippen
Former NBA-Chicago Bulls player, Scottie Pippen, crossed the burning sands too. Word has it he’s also a Mason.
Al McKay
Guitarist, songwriter, producer, vocalist and former member of Earth, Wind & Fire,as well as Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Al McKayalso proudly reps the honorary blue.
Bobby Jones, Ph.D.
The gospel legend and Tennessee State University alum who brings us spiritual wellness on BET is a Sigma. He’s a Grammy award winning gospel music recording artist and television host as well
Bill Clinton
Former U.S. president, Bill Clinton, was inducted into Phi Beta Sigma fraternity as an honorary member. Another one of the many reasons everyone says he’s a black man trapped in a white man’s body.
Flex Alexander
Mark Alexander Knox, also known as just “Flex,” first started out as back-up dancer for Salt-n-Pepa. He eventually transitioned into acting and comedy.
The Temptations
Motown sensation group, The Temptations, were made honorary members of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
Hines Ward
Former football wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Hines Edward Ward, Jr. is a Sigma from the University of Georgia. He is currently an NBC studio analyst.

Al Joyner
Al Joyner is a former track and field Olympic gold medalist and husband of the “fastest woman in the world” Florence Griffith Joyner, as well as the brother of the “greatest female athlete,” Jackie Joyner Kersee. He also pledged Phi Beta Sigma at Arkansas State University.

Known as the “Plant Doctor,” he discovered 300 uses for peanuts among many other things. Trust that Sigmas are proud to claim the Tuskegee grad as one of their own.
Joe L. Dudley, Sr.
Dudley Products, founder, President & CEO Joe Dudley is a Sigma.
Huey P. Newton, Ph.D.
Power to the people. Pump ya fist in the air. Black power! Co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense was a Sigma, ya’ll. He crossed Beta Tau at the University of California Santa Cruz.
