Jill Scott emerged on the music scene with her poetic songs, soulful voice and natural hair in 2000. Not fitting in to the stereotypical beauty standards, Scott embraced her individuality and her fans loved her for it. Although she can rock wigs and weaves with the best of them, the Philly native insisted on featuring her natural hair on the October 2012 cover of Essence. “This is the simplest form of myself,” she said. “I look in the mirror and it’s like, ‘Hey, there you go. What’s up, girl?’ For me, hair is an accoutrement. Hair is jewelry. It’s an accessory. Tomorrow I may want a wig down to my butt and I’m gonna rock it, and the next day I may want a big Afro and I’m gonna rock that too…”
