When a Hollywood couple makes the hard choice to split up, most of the times it’s the wife who walks away practically set for life. However, these 15 famous women were forced to cough up the alimony when the marriage was over.
Britney Spears shocked the world by marrying her childhood friend during a night of partying in Las Vegas. That union was quickly annulled and Spears found herself walking down the aisle months later, this time to her backup dancer, Kevin Federline. Her second marriage lasted a bit longer — three years — and for his time as Mr. Britney Spears, Federline received $40,000 a month in alimony. Federline is reportedly content to remain a single man in order to continue cashing in his monthly checks. Federline was originally awarded custody of their two boys but after Spears took some time off to work on personal issues, they now share joint custody.
Christina Aguilera got her start in the entertainment industry at an early age so in 2005, the “Fighter” singer married music marketing exec Jordan Brafman and took some time off to start a family. Although motherhood suited Aguilera well, married life to Brafman did not and she filed for divorce in 2010. Ready to get on with her love life, Aguilera allegedly moved her new boyfriend into the mansion that she still shared with her soon-to-be ex-husband. A prenup was signed that reportedly left Brafman with nothing, but an undisclosed settlement was reached and with some coins in his pockets, Brafman moved out of the residence.
Madonna first emerged onto the music scene back in the early 80’s. After a failed marriage to actor Sean Penn and various relationships and flings with celebrities, including Dennis Rodman, the “Like A Virgin” singer thought she found love with British director Guy Ritchie. The couple tied the knot just a few months after Madonna gave birth to their son in 2000. Unfortunately, happily ever after for the couple meant eight years. Madonna filed for divorce citing “unreasonable behavior” and had to cough up a sizable amount from her estimated $500 million bank account. Ritchie reportedly walked away with a fifth of Madonna’s money in cold, hard cash.
Before “Scandal” came along, creator Shonda Rhimes had another very popular show that had a lot of buzz. Actress Kate Walsh starred in ABC’s “Private Practice” and was living on the top of the world until her marriage of 15 months to movie exec Alex Young came crashing down. Young filed for a divorce and Walsh did her own filing a few weeks later. After the dust settled, Young received a lump sum of $627,000 plus half the residuals for the “Private Practice” episodes Walsh appeared in while they were married. A coin was flipped to see who would have first dibs on the distribution of communal property, including artwork and furniture.
Roseanne Barr didn’t follow her dreams of becoming a comedian and television star until she was in her 30’s. By the time she married fellow comic Tom Arnold in 1990, Barr was a household name with her own sitcom. Barr fired her lawyers after they suggested the happy couple sign a prenup, which turned out to be a very costly lesson for the former talk show host to learn. Four years later, the couple was no longer happy and they split up. Arnold reportedly walked away from the marriage $50 million richer than when he said, “I do,” but he claims he didn’t take a dime.
Before she found love the second time around with current husband and star of NBC’s “Parks & Recreation” Chris Pratt, Anna Faris tied the knot to actor Benjamin Indra in 2004. While Faris’ star power continued to rise in the marriage, her husband’s career floundered. After three whole years of marriage, the two split up and went their separate ways. However, the House Bunny star walked away without almost a million dollars. Indra was awarded $900,000 plus property and acting royalties in the divorce.
Janet Jackson sure values her privacy. It wasn’t until after her choreographer Rene Elizondo filed for alimony that the rest of the world found out the two were married in the first place. Together for over 13 years, Jackson and Elizondo were married for eight. After they reportedly split over financial woes, Elizondo filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the “Rhythm Nation” singer. Jackson was forced to give her former flame $10 million as a parting gift.

Navratilova was in a long-term relationship with Toni Layton for 10 years before their relationship abruptly ended. Layton, who left her husband for Navratilova, was kicked out of their Florida home after the tennis star changed the locks. Initially, Navratilova offered her ex $200,000 but after Layton threatened to start revealing some of the skeletons buried in Navratilova’s closet, she ended up walking away with $2.8 million.

Anne Heche turned heads when she started dating comedian Ellen DeGeneres and those same heads turned when that relationship ended and Heche married Coleman Laffon a year later. Their split ended up being one of the messiest divorces in Hollywood. Heche and Laffon threw mud at each other in the media. Heche revealed Laffon’s love for Adult Videos and strippers while he called the Donnie Brasco star mentally unstable. The one-time “Baywatch” star wanted to have Alley continue to support his lavish lifestyle of “multiple residences with full-time staffs of housekeepers, chefs and nannies; exotic animals for pets, children’s birthday parties with marching bands and lavish gifts of Ferraris and sailboats.” Stevenson walked away with $6 million to help him keep up with the Jones’.
Rocker Melissa Etheridge announced to the world that she was a lesbian in 1993 and began a long-term relationship with Tammy Lynn Michaels. They exchanged vows in 2003 and Michaels gave birth to twins via an anonymous sp*erm donor. Etheridge and Michaels stayed together even during the singer’s battle with breast cancer but in 2010, the couple called it quits. A nasty battle ensued over money. Michaels accused Etheridge of virtually leaving her in the poor house and publicly called her out. Last year, Michaels went back to court asking the judge to increase the $23,000 a month she was getting in child and spousal support.
British-born actress Jane Seymour’s claim to fame is being one of the James Bonds’ girls. And the fact that she’s been married four times. Her divorce from third husband David Flynn lasted for 11 years and when it was over, the British actress was the one who had to pay. Flynn was looking for $20,000 a month but he had to settle for half after the judge awarded Seymour to pay $10,000 a month and surrender half of the value of their $5 million oceanfront home they once shared. Her fourth marriage almost lasted just as long. Seymour divorced James Keach earlier this year after ten years of marriage.
