2010 marked the arrival of some creative fashion risks via entertainers such as Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Nicki Minaj. Most of these risks resulted in success, but there were more than a few cracks along this year’s catwalk. Take a look at some of the fashion fails of the past year:
1) Gigantic False Eyelashes:
When false eyelashes are applied correctly, they can enhance the true beauty of the eye, but if not, it can look like Batman or some other creature has landed on your lid. Trimming and individual lashes are your friends.
2) Lace Front Wigs:
Lace front wigs can be a fun way to play with different styles, colors and length; the catch is most of the time women opt for an inexpensive wig and/or installation and the result is something that looks inexpensive . If you are going to consider hair extensions, invest your money into something that is complimentary. Your hairline should not look like it’s growing from your forehead.
3) Black Leggings
Anything is unhealthy when it isn’t done in moderation. Black leggings were the sweatpants of 2010: When worn it sometimes looks like you didn’t even try. Even worse is that they are often paired with white underwear and nothing to cover your assets. Tunics and accessories can take black leggings from basic to an actual outfit.
4) Open-Toed Boots
Your foot is cold, but your toes aren’t? This trend was both confusing and 95% of the time, not cute. Choice can be difficult for some so let me make it easy for you: sandal, boot or frostbite?
5) Inappropriate tattoos
This was the year of the face tattoo made even more popular by celebrities such as Lil’ Wayne and reality star “Danger” from For the Love of Ray-J. Explicit tattoos may work in the entertainment industry, but for those of us 9-5 professionals this is usually a fail with a “you’re fired” on top.
6) Booty padding
If you’ve got it flaunt it, but if you don’t fake it until you make it. You are fooling no one if your butt is flat as Kim Zolciak’s singing voice one day and then rotund and round the next. In a perfect world we would all love the booties we were blessed with, but for those who are having a hard time invest in squats and the local Popeye’s Chicken.
7) Skinny Jeans
Skinny jeans were perfect for the ladies to tuck in this season’s knee-high riding boots, but for the men…not so much. In a world of extremes our guys were left to choose between drowning in saggy jeans or jeans so tight it left their girlfriends confused on laundry day. There’s a big bright world of fitted denim; do your genitals a favor and explore it.
8. Perilous Pumps
Beauty is pain, but it should never be torture. And if Alexander McQueen’s 12 inch platform inspired by Darwin’s Origin of the Species is any indication, some of us should be buying life insurance to go with our Louboutins. Some fashion is best left to Lady Gaga, not real life.
9) Faux-hawks
Once again, a lack of choice seemed to define trends of 2010. With artists such as Cassie, Rihanna and Fantasia inspiring women and girls to rock rooster-style rip-offs, one question remained: What do they do when they are having a “ponytail” type of day?
10) Jeggings
What else could make the “lack of choice” theme complete besides the infectious combination of leggings and jeans. This trend died an ugly death when host Conan O’ Brien recently rocked a pair on his late night show. Pair this with your booty pad and you might have yourself a hit….but more than likely a miss.
Which beauty and fashion trends from 2010 do you hope will never come back in style?
