Love It Or Leave It?: Keri Hilson’s ‘Pretty Girl Rock’

November 13, 2010  |

Keri Hilson’s video for her new song “Pretty Girl Rock” is all types of adorable. In it, she pays homage to several black female entertainers, including Janet Jackson, Diana Ross and TLC.  Keri must have had a grand ol’ time playing dress up.  The words are cute and full of new millennium girl power attitude.

Pretty as a picture
Sweeter than a swisher
Mad cause I’m cuter than the girl that’s with ya
I can talk about it cause I know that I’m pretty
And if you know it too then ladies sing it with me

-Keri Hilson, “Pretty Girl Rock”

Cute, right? I like how she has the whole prissy girl vibe, but adds a little hood to it with the swisher comparison. The video and lyrics are right on the money. The song itself? Eh. It’s growing on me, but  I wanted more umph and less bubble gum with the production. I want the beat and the melody to go harder than they do, especially on the hook/chorus.

What do you think about “Pretty Girl Rock?”  Do you see this being “your song” when you’re at the club?
