The Alicia Keys gay rumors began very early in the singer’s career and persisted right up until her 2010 marriage to Swizz Beatz. If you remember, Alicia’s early style was characterized by cornrows and doorags, which despite being kind of cute, incited some serious speculation into her sexuality. Alicia admits that her look was a bit tomboy-ish, but that it felt most natural given that she’d grown up in the rough Hell’s Kitchen section of Manhattan – where showing too much skin and attracting too much attention was dangerous. Turns out, she carried this belief right on into her dealings with fame. Alicia said:
“I didn’t want attention like that so I shrank away from it. It was awhile before I became comfortable as a young lady to be able to dress more feminine.”
