Let’s talk about lubricant! It’s important and no sex should be going down without it!  Adequate (or more than) vaginal moisture makes for better sex for both partners in most cases. Intercourse and vaginal dryness is a big no-no. In addition to being pretty damned uncomfortable, it’s also dangerous: the friction caused can result in cuts and tears to your lady parts. And I know you don’t want that.

The most common lubricant is, of course, your own: i.e. the natural wetness that is produced by arousal. A good sign that you and/or your partner have not had enough foreplay time is a lack of natural moisture. Don’t let his or her libido or your mind get too far ahead of your own body. Slow down, get someone’s hand down there or perhaps request a little oral loving before proceeding.

While some women produce lots of wetness, others do not. Fear not, ladies! Your local drugstore or sex shop has you covered with a host of different types of lubricants that can moisturize your situation and preserve your Hot time!

The lubes you find in the store* fall into two main categories: water based and silicone based. The former (Astroglide and KY Jelly being the most popular) is less messy than the latter and doesn’t require as much post-sex cleanup, as it can be pretty much absorbed into the skin. However, water based products may require more frequent reapplication than silicone ones, which can stay wet much longer.  On the other hand, silicone lubes (Wet Platinum is an amazing one) can be used in water, take an incredibly long time to dry (which means you can go and go without adding more)  and are slicker than the others.

You have your standard lubricants which are simply designed to provide varying degrees of wetness (think of regular-variety KY as a basic, entry level variety). And then you have your bells and whistles varieties to play with: warming lubes, which either heat up after coming in contact with the skin or once there is friction present, tingling varieties. You also have gels, jellies, sprays….KY even makes a few vaginal moisture products that claim to work for up to four days. Take a trip to your nearest sex shop and try some of these products out before you rush out and purchase them. You can also see how they feel in those stores and then check and see if Target or an online retailer has them cheaper (they usually do).

*Before using a lubricant with your partner, I’d urge you to test it out on yourself to see if you like the feel of it and to ensure that you don’t have an allergy.
