In the ’90’s if you didn’t have baby hair, you weren’t doing much. Black folk across the country spent countless hours in the mirror, using a toothbrush and gel to shape the perfect swirl around their edges. Slick and sleek was the look and no one was trying to be caught with frizzy edges. Check out the artists who took the baby hair phenomenon to a whole new level.

If we could dub anyone King of the baby hair it would be Ginuwine. Back in the ’90’s it was nothing for our R&B singers to really tap into their feminine sides. And Ginuwine certainly wasn’t shy. The only question we have is, was he the one standing in the mirror perfecting his baby hair or did he get Missy to do it.

We ask if Missy did Ginuwine’s do because she was no stranger to the baby hair herself. Even though Missy was known to step outside the box with her groundbreaking fashions and vocal ad-libs (Hee Hee Hee Hee How!), she stuck to the standard and made sure her finger waves continued their perfect pattern down the side of her face.

Michael Jackson

Is this perplexing or what? It’s hard to tell whether Michael was balding prematurely or if someone was just overzealous in collecting hair from the edges to increase the baby hair real estate. Either way, it’s…something. It’s a wonder that we’re not able to see any gel flakes in this close up shot.

Jennifer Lopez

Don’t think baby hair is just for black folk. In this photo J-Lo proves that the Latinas are down with the sticky swirl as well. We really shouldn’t be surprised though. Anyone could argue that Jenny from the block has tried to tap into virtually every facet of black culture. That is a severe swoop right?

Janet Jackson

Aww! Remember this little one? Those Jackson genetics are not the only things Janet and Michael shared. They both knew how to slick it down. We’re not going to even clown little Janet for this because there’s nothing wrong with baby hair when you’re still…well, a baby. But Janet was using that toothbrush long after this photo was taken.

If Ginuwine is the king of baby hair, Chilli reigns supreme as the queen. This R&B singer, who is of both Arabic and Native American descent, will probably rock some form of baby hair until the day she dies.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Sure, these side burns were for a movie role but between her portrayal Lena on “A Different World” and the short blonde cut she rocked in her real life, we know Jada worked the mess out of that dingy toothbrush.

Da Brat

Even though Da Brat was thugged all the way out, she was just lady-like enough to try and smooth out those edges. And not just on the sides either, Da Brat stayed with baby hair around the entire perimeter.

Lil Kim

This is severe right. Clearly, Lil Kim wanted more than just a little bit of edge hair. In this shot, Kim grabbed up a small section.

The last time we saw Brandy’s full head of hair was when she played Danesha on “Thea.” Even though she’s been braided or weaved up ever since, she always gave us a peek at the baby hair.
