Are the cold weather and long winter days getting you down? If you’re feeling tired, lazy, sluggish, or just a bit off, a little self-care can do wonders to lift your spirits. A fresh haircut, for example, can give you that boost of energy you need to get up off the couch, out of those baggy sweatpants and into a sexy outfit. With a brand new haircut you feel more motivated to get things done and reconnect with friends, even in the chill of winter — because when you look good, you feel good.

This isn’t just a saying either, there’s science behind the famous motto. According to biopsychologist, Marry Poffenroth, getting a new haircut during the colder months can give you a nice dopamine release, helping to improve your self-esteem and confidence.

“We are looking at our heads all the time, so [hair] really can be a strong association with our identity,” the health expert said during an interview with SELF published Jan. 7. As Poffenroth explains, this is one of the reasons why a great haircut can leave you feeling genuinely “transformed” or “empowered.”

If you’re looking for a few haircut ideas that will help lift you out of a winter funk, here are a few hairstyles that are worth trying this season.

The curly shag is a fun, low-maintenance style that plays up natural curls while giving them a modern twist. With its choppy layers and volume at the crown, it adds texture and movement, making it perfect for the winter months when you want a cozy yet cool look. Actress Zendaya pulled this look off effortlessly while attending the Kid’s Choice Awards in 2017.

The best part about the curly shag is that it works with all curl types, from loose waves to tight coils, and requires little styling. You can add some mousse or curl cream to enhance the shape or volume of your crown. It’s an effortlessly chic choice that can keep you feeling fresh and free, no matter how chilly it gets outside.
