Pastor Cal

It seems since COVID has come and altered the state of the world, that the “Married at First Sight” experts are spending a lot less time with the couples as they navigate their journeys as husband and wife. And that’s a bit of a shame because some of these couples could have really benefited from the additional insight. Thankfully, during last night’s episode, all of them sat down individually with the experts, Pastor Cal and Dr. Pepper to hash some things out. And the insight was spot on. Let’s get into it on the following pages.

Ryan MAFS Season 12 Episode 1

Ryan and Dr. Pepper

Chile…I still don’t know a thing about Ryan. Homeboy always seems like he’s delivering a sales pitch. The first thing he did with Dr. Pepper is tell her how great things were in his marriage–not knowing that his wife is sexually frustrated and even apprehensive about sharing her real feelings with him.

As much as Clara and Ryan claim they get along, they really haven’t talked about the big stuff, including how they’re going to raise their future children with a mix of religious foundation and freedom to choose.

I was happy Dr. Pepper asked Ryan how Clara felt about the lack of sex in their relationship because it seemed like it was something he never even considered. Furthermore, when he got home and asked Clara about it, he still didn’t open up or give her anything in terms of what she might be able to look forward to in the future.

Clara

For the first time, I saw Clara also attempt to deny her feelings when it came to how she was really handling things in her marriage. She told Pastor Cal it was a 10/10. But once he dug a little deeper, he realized that just could not be the case when she can’t express her unfiltered feelings. She can’t discuss how she feels about sex…or their lack of it. And even worse, she can’t tell Ryan that she loves him for fear that it will push him away. Not being able to communicate feelings–both good and bad is an issue.

Vinny and Briana

The money conversation between Briana and Vincent was an interesting one to watch. I can’t say I’m mad at Briana. Sis makes good money and she wants to spend it. Now, I don’t know about dropping $300 a month on clothes in the middle of a Panasonic but to each their own. My money is not as long as hers. Still, I hear Vincent when he says he wants to save a little bit. That’s important. And it’s good to know he’s thinking about the future. I really liked what Dr. Pepper said to Briana about money and learning its value to Vincent. It’s crucial info.

Sleeping in…

Briana is really going to have to chill on controlling what time Vincent goes to sleep and wakes up in the morning. If his sleeping habits aren’t negatively affecting her, this is something she’s going to have to let go. It doesn’t mean Vincent is lazy. It means he works different hours and has a different sleeping schedule. She’s going to have to let him figure that out on his own. Telling a grown person when and how to sleep generally doesn’t go over well. And Pastor Cal was right in telling him that he has to do what’s best for himself instead of worrying about pleasing her in this instance.

Scared of Pregnancy

Interestingly, Briana and Vincent are concerned about hurting one another, just in different ways. He doesn’t want her to think his sleep is a reflection of his lack of work ethic and she doesn’t want to scare him with the news that being pregnant and giving birth is a legit fear for her. She told Dr. Pepper that she doesn’t want to let him down. That was sweet. But they’re going to have to have some real deep, real hard conversations about this baby thing very soon…especially since Vincent is talking about four whole children.

Sadly, when she brought her concerns to him, it didn’t seem like he fully grasped the gravity of what she was saying. The editing was weird because I’m sure he wasn’t silent. But if he was more supportive it would have been nice to see that.

Haley and Jacob

I’m always astounded to hear Jacob and Haley say that they’re not giving up. Like y’all please. It’s a wrap. It would literally take a miracle to spark even the slightest connection between these two. And the clock is ticking.

Erik and Virginia

Y’all know Erik gets on my nerves. He’s entirely too controlling and acts like such a know-it-all when it comes to relationships. So I can’t tell you the absolute glee I felt when Dr. Pepper asked him straight up, ‘Why do you have to be that dog’s dad?!’ LOLL whew chile! That was the one. It’s not important. But it was clear Erik saw this as another opportunity to assert control in the house.

I was also happy to hear her tell him that it’s important to speak both truthfully and kindly. So saying if she doesn’t want kids, I’m out is not the best way to communicate that message. It was something Virginia shared with Pastor Cal as well. Along with her fear of having children–which again, is valid.

As much as Erik irritates me, I have to admit he did a pretty good job with his conversation with Virginia after his meeting with Dr. Pepper. He spoke kindly. He reassured her about children. He did fumble the ball when he asked her to cancel plans…like bruh plan ahead and then let her rock. That’s not hard. But he even broached the drinking topic with care.

Sadly, homegirl was not trying to hear that at all…which is a red flag. He didn’t ask her to give up alcohol forever, he said when they need to have real conversations she needs to be sober and sis couldn’t even receive that. Yikes.

Paige and Dr. Pepper

Whew. I was so glad to see Dr. Pepper tell Paige the truth about Chris. The man is a narcissist with a mess of a life. Ding, DONG! By George, she’s got it. Dr. Pepper was able to recognize game. Sadly, from what I’ve seen of Paige and Chris, including clips from previous episodes, I have to wonder if Paige really internalized that message. A narcissist only keeps you around to stroke and feed their ego. He will never be able to give Paige even a fraction of what she wants and what she deserves. Because he doesn’t even see her. And it has nothing to do with being attracted to her or not. It’s his character.

Dr. Pepper told her straight up, he told you he bought the mother of his child a new car to hurt you. And I would argue, he did it to flex on national television. He’s sick. And Paige needs to stop trying to save him and save herself.

Chris and Pastor Cal

I don’t know what I can say about homeboy that I haven’t already said. His spirit is dark. Pastor Cal honestly could have drilled down even further with him. Because I didn’t like all that giggling he was doing. But then again, if Pastor Cal had said too much he would have walked out of the room anyway. Thankfully, he did tell Chris that his responds to certain things, show just how little he cares about Paige and her feelings.
