Young, Black and Fly: Malia Obama’s Trendsetting Style

Most of the time when we talk about the first family, we’re talking about President Obama’s policies, Sasha’s latest cutesy move or Michelle’s fabulous style. But don’t be deceived, Michelle is not the only one who’s being styled to a tee. The eldest Obama daughter, Malia, is slowly and steadily solidifying herself as a style star as well. Check out some of her best looks below.

Black and Blue

Looking at this picture, it’s extremely evident how much this girl has grown since she first stepped onto the public scene. Here at the Democratic National Convention in 2008, Malia’s skin looks radiant as she sports an age appropriate, yet fashionable, blue (turquoise?) and black dress.

Ironically the dress chosen for election night in November was more child-like than the convention dress, but it’s cool, considering Malia, now 13, was only 10 years old at the time. Are you feeling the crinkled, poofy skirt?

Bundled Up

Even though both Sasha and Malia’s outfits were covered by their outerwear, we just can’t help but admire how adorable they looked in these colorful coats. The royal blue was perfect for the occasion. And judging by the girl’s happy faces it looks like those coats did their jobs and kept the first little ones warm so they could enjoy their father’s inauguration.

Too Cool for School

Of course, “too cool for school” is nothing more than an expression in this case. Michelle and Barack both would probably have a heart attack if either one of their daughters abandoned their studies. While we’d bet money that both of the girls are intelligent, they certainly don’t give off a geeky vibe. Here Malia is working those shades and her body posture is relaxed and confident. A lesson, she learned from Dad no doubt.

Pre Teen

When Malia turned 12, she really started to look less like a child and more like a young woman. We’re loving the checkered black and white top, white pants and oversized bag. It’s an outfit a few grown folks wouldn’t mind borrowing.

Little Black Dress

Look past the look of excitement and focus on the outfit. This little black [ruffled] dress, complete with the gold belt is really working for Malia.

Like Mother Like Daughter

We see you Malia! This outfit could have easily been swiped from Michelle’s closet. While the Obama family has no need to recycle clothes, I’m sure they have more than enough, it won’t be long before Malia’s able to wear her mother’s fly ensembles. (If she hasn’t started already.)

Easter Fresh

At the annual Easter Egg roll Malia donned the perfect colors, from the colored capri pants to the billowing top and the pastel tank, this outfit screams Easter.

So Sophisticated

This is probably… no definitely my favorite look of hers thus far. This vintage-looking blouse and navy blue skirt serve as a contrast to the black combat boots. But that’s what I love about this choice. It’s the combination of the styles, eras and moods that make this outfit a hit in my book. Not to mention, no one can look bad standing next to Bo.

All about the Sleeves

Don’t you just love this! I have to admire Malia for having the guts to decide to wear such a bold color. Sure, it was probably selected by a stylist but I sincerely doubt that she has no say in what she’s going to wear. I’m loving the exaggerated sleeves and the statement necklace she’s wearing with the dress too. And don’t think we don’t notice little Sasha over there in the cut. We’re sure she’ll grow into a little fashionista in her own time.
