With the divorce rate up to fifty percent, any couple that can make it over that twenty-year hump is straight-up goals. Samuel Jackson and his wife, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, have done that and then some. The legendary actor took to Instagram Sunday to shout out his number one girl for sticking with him for 39 years of marriage.
“Happy Anniversary @ltjackson_ ‼ï¸You’re my Rock & reason to get up everyday work on giving you the best I have to offer,” the Eve’s Bayou actor captioned their wedding photo. “Thanks for All you Are! You are Love, walking , talking, challenging & everlasting! I Love You with all that I amðŸ˜ðŸ’¥ðŸ’‼ï¸#ifitwaseasyerrrbodycoulddoit #itsallbeenworthit.”
The Spelhouse graduates tied the knot in 1980. When asked what has helped their marriage to withstand the test of time, LaTanya said that they lean on God.
“You have to have a big heart and the Lord. You can’t do this without the Lord. You’re going to have to turn to somebody, something — because men, they are different,” Richardson-Jackson told Essence last year. “They’re cut from a different cloth.”
In addition, she shared that it has always been important to release anger before going to bed at night.
“No matter what: don’t let the sun go down on your wrath. I’d be like this,” she said, gritting her teeth, “‘OK goodnight, I love you. I love you.’ And I’d go to sleep.”
The To Kill A Mockingbird actress went on to say that she and Samuel always considered keeping their family together to be a revolutionary act to which they were both committed.
“I’m telling you, we were revolutionaries,” she said. “We used to say the most revolutionary thing was to keep a Black family together. So that became our mantra.”
