Black people have a historical and rational fear of the police. After all, for centuries they’ve used their government-issued power and authority to disenfranchise, harass, abuse and kill Black folk.
With that type of knowledge, Black folk have a tendency to get a little leery when they come around. But given the fact that police officers are almost always armed, many of us feel powerless when it comes to confronting them, even while they’re in the midst of behaving illegally, immorally or corruptly.
But that was not the case for Ms. Angela Whitehead of Billings, Montana.
Whitehead was in her family home when two White police officers crossed the threshold into her home. They told her they heard an argument.
Since it’s not illegal to argue in one’s home, Whitehead, confidently, loudly, defiantly and aggressively told the two officers to get o-u-t.
And it was beautiful.
