On Friday, the highly anticipated film Nappily Ever After will debut on Netflix. Sanaa Lathan is the star of the movie adapted from the book by the same name. But while the actress is portraying a woman who undergoes several hair changes as she attempts to reassemble her perfect life that’s begun to unravel, Lathan went through her own internal and external transformation while playing the part.
In a candid conversation with Hello Beautiful and MadameNoire editors Shamika Sanders, Keyaira Kelly, and Charise Frazier, Lathan talks about making the decision to chop her own hair, which she’d been growing for years, instead of wearing a prosthetic to play leading lady Violet Jones. And as the editors open up about their own hair journeys and struggles, Lathan is brought to tears thinking about the damage that’s been done to little Black girls who never get the message that wearing a short curly ‘fro like hers is beautiful. The 47-year-old even confesses that every other day she grapples with the decision to rock a weave but says right now she is making herself where her hair natural and learning to see her strands as beautiful just as they are.
