If you watch Married to Medicinethen you know that Dr. Heavenly Kimes is a dentist, she is quite shady, and she likes to call her husband, Dr. Damon, “Daddy.” If you’re new to watching the series, it can be a bit much, but for Heavenly, it’s natural. She’s been calling that man “Daddy” since they had their first son.

“Let me tell you why I call my husband Daddy,” she said in a new interview with Hollywood Unlocked, surprisingly, alongside sometimes-nemesis Mariah Huq. “My husband and I just had our first son, Damon, Jr., and his name is Damon too so my son would call him Damon because I called him Damon, so I started calling him Daddy and he liked it. He liked it!”

If you have a close relationship with your father, the idea of calling your romantic partner “Daddy” probably seems inappropriate. That is the case for her co-star, who prefers to call her husband everything but “Daddy.”

“Everybody’s different. I call him husband, I call him boo, I call him bae, I call him Aydin,” said Mariah. “Because I had a father. My father just died two years ago and it would make my skin crawl to call my husband Daddy. You asked, I’m gonna tell you. For me, because I had a really close relationship with my father, he just died on Christmas Eve two years ago and I cannot call my husband Daddy and then sleep with him. But he’s still my king.”

But Heavenly says people read too deeply into the way she addresses her husband, and for the record, she was also pretty close with her own father. As she told listeners, “Everyone’s not deserving of the title,” but Damon certainly is.

“And it’s not taking away from my father either,” Heavenly said. “I don’t have an issue with my father. My father is deceased as well and we had a close relationship. I think people read too much into stuff. I call him Daddy because he’s everything a daddy should be.”

And while Mariah may not do it or agree with it (or much of anything Heavenly says and does), she can respect that it works for the Kimes household.

“I think sometimes you just have to do what’s good in your household,” she said. “She calls her husband Daddy, I call mine Boo, Bae or whatever. So you’ve got to do what works for you in your household.”

The whole interview is actually pretty entertaining, but you can check out the “Daddy” conversation at the 43:50 mark below:
