Zoe Saldana has always been notoriously private. When she married husband Marco Perego in 2013, she didn’t confirm the news until six months after. When she was carrying her twins Cy and Bowie, it was pop star Britney Spears who actually spilled the beans about her pregnancy, months after initial speculation. When they welcomed a third child named Zen, she didn’t go into specifics about how he came into the world. And when she posts pictures of her children on Instagram, their faces are often obscured to protect their identity.

But while celebrating the third birthday of her first-born sons on Monday, Saldana decided to try something different and be a bit more open, revealing the boys’ faces, which are super adorable:

Are they not the spitting image of their mom?

To celebrate their third year, Saldana also was open about the impact her sons have had on her life.

“Happy Birthday Bowie and Cy! Today, November 27th will always be the happiest and scariest day of our lives,” she said in a post on Instagram. “On a day like today, three years ago our lives changed forever. We went from being two to four in just 2 minutes. Even though your arrival was early and with a couple of scary hiccups you have been the light of our lives ever since we learned of your presence within us. Your strength, determination, curiosity and kindness humble us every day. Thank You for choosing us to guide you through the first stages of your purposeful path in life. You are both meant for greatness and by the grace of God your father and I will make sure you grow up to be exceptional men that will bring healing , wisdom, happiness, and change into this world. We have a big task ahead us, and that is to raise healthy, empathetic and selfless men. We hope to never let you down. And please continue to teach us how you need to be loved, seen, spoken to, taught, encouraged, protected- all the things you need to thrive and make your life meaningful.”

While she might have pulled the curtain back a bit to honor her boys, don’t expect such unreserved details from here on out on her life. As Saldana has said before, she likes to maintain her privacy to maintain her sanity.

“I love what I do so much, but I love my [personal] life more,” she said in Ocean Drive Magazine back in 2013. “I realized through the years of being in this business that the only way to maintain some kind of sanity is to protect that which is most dear to you, which is your life and everyone that’s in it.”
