Life is quite long to be with just one partner. And remember, older generations didn’t do the whole have three serious relationships and live with several boyfriends before getting married at age 36 thing like millennials are doing. Some such couples may have been married for forty years by the time they turn 60. That is, truly, a very long time to be with just one person.
Meanwhile, when this couple introduces some of their old friends to new friends, the former always assumes the latter are swingers. More specifically, the old friends will pull the couple in the open marriage aside and ask, “So are you um, sleeping with these new friends?”
My boyfriend and I had a really funny argument in which we were trying to sniff out if either of us would swing. In an attempt to sound totally cool with my friends’ lifestyle, I accidentally sounded like I wanted to participate. “I don’t see anything wrong with it. It works for some people!” is what I said. But what my partner heard was, “I want to swing!”
Part of the excitement of an open marriage is telling your friends all about your extramarital activities. But if they don’t agree with what you’re doing, they don’t really want to hear about it, either.
Don’t freak out: it’s just a discussion. Your partner is allowed to bring things up, just as you are allowed to bring things up. Too many people react to their partner’s suggestion of an open marriage as if their partner is insisting on one, or has even already started pursuing one.
