The admiration and ridicule our former (and forever) First Lady, Michelle Obama, received was, I’m sure, unlike anything this nation has ever seen. On the one hand, she was revered and on the other, being the first Black woman to hold the position, she was the target of hate and scorn.
Even the expectations from Black women could be intense at times. In many ways she was a reflection of us. And Black women wanted her to be so many different things, it would be hard for anyone to keep up. If you’re wondering what I mean, I want to direct your attention to this photoshopped picture of Mrs. Obama that hit the internet during her time in the White House.
And while the image was beautiful, it wasn’t real.
But today, we were blessed with a special gem from the internet. A real image of Mrs. Obama’s natural hair.
And child this one just appears to be more authentic. And while I have yet to stumble across any valid receipts, it didn’t keep the internet from rejoicing. After all, Mrs. Obama’s hairstylist Johnny Wright revealed that Mrs. Obama is chemical free.
“It has grown a tremendous amount over the past eight years. One thing that contributed to that was us going natural and moving away from chemicals,” Wright said of Obama’s lengthy hair. “I have felt that, for a women with her schedule that’s getting her hair done quite often, it’s better when it’s healthier, and it’s healthier when it’s natural. Because of that, it’s been able to grow out longer with the natural hair instead of relaxer.”
There’s a theory that the photo was taken from the family’s 2016 New Year’s vacation. We can’t be sure. But now, there’s proof of her hair’s bountiful, kinky, curly glory. And Black women across the digital space loved it. See what they had to say on the following pages.
