Back in the day when you were a child, chances are you were every bit as innocent and naïve as children are known to be. With so much to learn, you didn’t have the mental capacity to fully understand the world around you. Your needs were rather basic and your world was a lot smaller. You weren’t caught up in the intricacies and complexities of adulthood – rightfully so. Though at some point, you probably couldn’t wait to be a grownup so you could make your own decisions and set your own rules (as well as make and spend your own money). It’s safe to say that when we were kids, we took a lot of things for granted. Not intentionally, of course. But that’s just the way it is. Kids should be kids, after all. But let us know if any of the following sounds familiar. Did you take some of these things for granted when you were a child?

Support

Bullies aside, when you’re a kid, so many people are rooting for you. Your parents and family, teachers, counselor or principal, neighbors, church or mosque members and more want to see you happy and want to see you succeed. They are willing to do what they can to make that happen. That support system is invaluable. It doesn’t necessarily go away when you’re an adult, but you take on much more responsibility, of course, when you reach a certain age.

Responsibilities

The most common responsibilities children have are cleaning their room, doing chores and doing well in school. It might seem like a lot at the time, but…yeah. Not so much.

Fears

Not every child’s circumstances are the same so we won’t assume to know their logical and justifiable fears. But generally speaking, kids have simple fears – they’re afraid of the dark, of a favorite toy being taken away, or being grounded.

Mistakes

We all make mistakes. And we don’t stop making them when we reach adulthood, but the consequences of certain mistaken actions can be severe and have lasting impacts. When you make mistakes as a child, however, you not only have greater leniency, but the protection of your parents or guardian.

Time

That hour it takes to get from point A to point B feels like an eternity for many children. Time definitely moves a lot slower when you’re a kid and you think you have so much of it at your disposal.

Basic Needs

If your parents or guardians are doing right by you when you’re a kid, you take for granted the care, time, effort, money and love they pour into providing everything for you.

Protection

You might witness violence as a child, but trust that the people who love and care for you will shield you from that and any other violence to the best of their abilities, and at all costs.

Money

They know that money doesn’t grow on trees, but somehow the concept of having to work for money is lost on kids of a certain age. And they think their parents are simply denying them something they want if money is ever called into question.

Easily Impressionable

You can make a game out of almost anything when you’re a child. And your mood can turn from sad to happy almost instantaneously. One moment you’re crying, the next, you’re outside playing and having the time of your life.

Friends

Not only is it easier to make friends when you’re a kid, but friendships are a lot less complicated, and rightfully so, when you’re a child.
