I love Valentine’s Day. I always have. It’s one of those holidays that can sometimes feel so commercial and corny, but I totally get sucked in because I think nothing is sweeter than making the people around you feel loved.
I know Valentine’s Day is a holiday for lovers, and although I appreciate the romantic side of things, I have to admit that it’s never felt like just a romantic holiday to me. When I think about Valentine’s Day, I think of my friends, my family and the kids exchanging valentines at school. I think it’s a day to express love to anyone in your life who brings you joy.
Whether you are in a romantic relationship or not, I hope you embrace Valentine’s Day this year. Like me, I hope you realize that it’s really not about cupid and romantic love (okay, maybe it is a little bit). But seriously, I just think we should all take some time to enjoy the day, regardless of what is going on in our personal lives. Life is too short. Here are 5 reasons to celebrate that are not romantic at all. I hope you take some time to have a little fun this Valentine’s Day.
No Pressure: 5 Non-Romantic Valentine’s Day Ideas
Having tons of fun with your kids
Valentines’ Day is a great time to enjoy family time. Now that your kids have finally come off of the Christmas high, it’s time to get crafty and creative. Work on crafts with your kids (maybe making cards to send to grandma and other people they love). Also, consider having some fun in the kitchen with heart-shaped meals and fun, colorful food decorations.
Enjoy some much needed time with your girls
I think planning a girl’s night out is a must-do, whether you are single or not. Taking time to enjoy food and drinks while catching up with your girls is good for the soul and it makes your realize how much you love them and what they add to your life. Valentines’ Day is on a Friday this year so take advantage of the weekend and get some time in with your homegirls.
Surprising people who need a pick-me-up
There are always people in your life (or even complete strangers) who could use a sweet surprise. Take a moment to send cards to your closest friends. Put together Valentine’s Day kits with your kids and deliver them to a homeless shelter. Take the time to do something that lets other people (whether you know them personally or not) know that they are loved.
Start spring cleaning a bit early
One of the things that stands out about Valentine’s Day the most are the bright colors. It just makes me happy. Is your home cluttered. Are the colors in your house dull? Does your place need a lift? If so, this is the perfect time to do it. Get organized, buy yourself some flowers and add a few items that pop. Your home needs some love, too.
Show yourself some love
I don’t care what anyone says – encouraging moms to practice self-care never gets old. Show yourself some love this Valentine’s Day. Go to the spa, get a mani or pedi, treat yourself to some perfume or your favorite chocolates and some bubbly. And, don’t forget to take a nice hot bath by candlelight. Your deserve it.
