So many women are dealing with an invasion in their wombs and no one seems to know why. As a holistic practitioner, I have worked with many women who have uterine fibroids, or benign uterine tumors, and challenging menstrual cycles. Fibroids can be singular or many, very small or as large as a watermelon. Some exhibit no signs or symptoms but often times they can cause a heavy or painful period, pain during sex, occasional sharp stabbing pains at the low abdomen and increased urinary frequency. What I know is that it is imperative to pay attention to food habits, nutrition and the mental and emotional play back that we feed ourselves. What is also effective is examining the body through the lens of the second chakra, a tool to help gain greater insight into the energy of the womb space. Our bodies are trying to tell us something and we must listen.

In Hindu tradition, the chakras are the body’s energy centers. There are seven chakra centers that correspond to organs, regions of the body, life stressors and more. The second chakra sits between the belly button and the top of the pubic bone. It rules the areas of the low back, low abdomen and ovaries/uterus/reproductive organs. It relates to passion, pleasure, change, career, creative products, money and one-on-one relationships. Western medicine doesn’t have an explanation for the cause of fibroids but according to Hindu practices, they’re caused by tension in one of the areas related to the second chakra. When stressed in one of these areas it’s very common for women to carry tension in their wombs resulting in fibroids and other gynecological problems. Symptomatic or not the body is a store house for what we experience in our lives. Challenged health provides opportunities to heal our lives on a deep and holistic level.

Many times as women we are left without direction on taking steps to self-heal. There are a few basic tips to get started that I have learned personally and in my practice over time. First, get in the frame of mind that it is absolutely essential to evaluate the mind, body and spirit when wellness is concerned—health is multifaceted. Here’s where you can begin to do some self reflection. Ask yourself, are you happy and fulfilled in your work? With your finances and in your interpersonal relationships? What would it take to get there? Do you exercise regularly? Do you offer your body food energy every three hours? Do you make healthy food choices? Are you living your passion, contributing your unique gifts to the world? Have you healed from past hurts from a lover or bad work experiences?

If you are finding that you have some work to do, then right on! The work you will do to heal your body will make big changes in your life. Taking on deep self-healing is not easy but so worth the empowerment that comes along with it. Here are a few tips for you to balance your second chakra:

  • Do exercises such as hula hooping and dance (particular salsa and belly dancing) to stimulate circulation in the second Chakra
  • In meditation, visualize a beautiful clear, brilliant orange glow in the womb space that reminds you that all is well
  • Commit to and schedule pleasurable activities that make you feel lovely
  • Create an affirmation that acts as a mantra for your well being (for example: Balance, joy and passion light my way and fuel my steps; I am well.)

The epidemic of womb disease should not be something we just accept without diligent examination of our lifestyles. As women we have to get this right. Get in touch with your body’s language and take personal inventory on your physical body, mental, emotional and nutritional health. Your second Chakra is an energetic store house for relationships, passion, pleasure, work and finance. Be open to a little self examination. It can be instrumental in your healing but don’t be afraid to seek additional help from a therapist, trainer, nutritionist or spiritual counselor. You owe it to yourself.
