J. Cole is usually cautious when it comes to his clever wordplay. But when he dropped a line negatively referencing autism (“I’m artistic, you niggas is autistic, retarded“) in the song “Jodeci Freestyle” with Drake, he caught some major heat. The rapper and St. John’s grad issued a letter of apology in which he owned up and sincerely apologized for his lyrics. He later took to social media to publish the letter and spread awareness about autism:
“I was instantly embarrassed that I would be ignorant enough say something so hurtful. What makes the crime worse is that I should have known better…While rappers apologize too often for causing offense, this apology IS necessary.”
