Sometimes these celebrities over-the-top personalities aren’t enough to fit inside one person and they develop separate identities to express themselves. Here’s a look at celebrity alter egos we know of.
WENNBeyonce
Beyonce is one of the biggest stars on the planet so it would make sense that her alter ego is famous as well. After leaving Destiny’s Child, the Houston native had the limelight all to herself and Beyonce would morph into her fierce and sassy alter ego, appropriately named Sasha Fierce, to have enough courage to be free and sexy on stage. She even named one of her albums “I Am Sasha Fierce” but now the “Bootylicious” singer no longer needs to rely on Fierce for inspiration. “I don’t need Sasha Fierce anymore, because I’ve grown and now I’m able to merge the two,” Beyonce said.
Musiq Soulchild
When he first emerged on the music scene, Musiq Soulchild was the quiet, smooth-talking neo-soul artist from Philly who melted hearts. His first two albums went platinum but since then, the “Halfcrazy” singer has seen his popularity wane. Intent on rebranding himself, a few years ago he announced the emergence of his new alter ego Purple who “is a folk/soul singer songwriter, something like a cross between Bob Marley and Sade, who sings about peace and love!!!” He also expressed his wish to one day tour the world as Purple.
Musiq again
One alter ego just isn’t enough for Musiq Soulchild. He’s currently on a media tour promoting his latest rebranding attempt as The Husel with a mixtape called “Husel Music.”
Mariah Carey
When we first noticed Mariah Carey she was the quiet and timid wife of music exec Tommy Mottola who had a set of pipes on her. Mariah became one of the best-selling singers right out of the gate but she suffered a serious slump in her career following a tanking movie and album. In 2005, Carey released her “The Emancipation of Mimi” album which helped her return to prominence. Mariah talked about the album saying, “Mimi is a very personal nickname only used by those closest to me… just one of those little things that I’ve kept for myself in an attempt to have some delineation between a public persona and a private life. “I am letting my guard down and inviting my fans to be that much closer to me… I’ve grown into a person and artist who no longer feels imprisoned by my insecurities or compelled to try and live up to someone else’s vision of ‘Mariah Carey.’”
Janet Jackson
Growing up as the youngest Jackson, little Janet was destined to follow in her famous brothers’ footsteps. First acting, Jackson eventually went into the world of singing and became a pop star in her own right. But she’s always played with her sexuality, and in 2004, she fully embraced her alter ego Damita Jo and delved even deeper. “My sexuality has been an ongoing discovery and theme,” Jackson explained. With ‘Damita Jo,’ I push the envelope a little further. As an artist, that’s not only my passion, it’s my obligation.”
Prince
Prince has never been shy about embracing his feminine side and that’s probably why he’s been so popular with the ladies. But back in the mid 80’s he fully embraced the woman inside of him and became the female singing alter ego Camille. In 1986, Prince ecorded an entire album as Camille and even named the album after her but, unfortunately for us, it was never released.
Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj has never been afraid to express herself through her outrageous clothing and colorful wigs. When she’s in the studio, sometimes she reverts back to the quick-witted spirited rapper that helped her mixtape grab so much attention. When she’s feeling especially fiery, the Young Money princess morphs into Roman Zolanski. Describing Zolanski as “So flamboyant, so outspoken, so open, and, you know, creative,” the alter ego has made appearances on “Roman In Moscow,” Trey Songz’ “Bottoms Up” and perhaps most infamously on Kanye West’s “Monster,” where Zolanski managed to outshine everyone on that song including Rick Ross, Jay Z and Yeezy himself.
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez got her start in the Disney circuit and as she’d gotten older, she’s shed some of that wholesome image she was known for. So it must’ve been refreshing for her to completely step out of her shoes and into a pair of Chuck Taylors. When she was tapped to host the MTV EMA’s, Gomez shot a promo for the awards ceremony that featured a flannel shirt-wearing, doorknocker earrings-wearer Gangster Gomez. Some of her raps included: “Who else better than me to be hosting the show? People know who the eff I is/ I’m a pro… Who’s the hostess with the mostess?/ I’m gonna be the focus/ S-E-L-E-N-A to the Gomez/ Yeah, you know I’m the dopest.”
Lady Gaga
Part of Lady Gaga’s appeal has been her androgynous look and the “Poker Face” singer has certainly played it up. Rumors have even emerged that Gaga was born a hermaphrodite. In 2011 as part of her MTV VMA performance, she became her alter ego Jo Calderone, a tough talking Italian guy from New Jersey. Calderone was busy that night. He flirted with Britney Spears, ran his mouth at the media and performed in place of Gaga for her song “You and I.”
Katy Perry
Katy Perry popped on the pop scene with a somewhat over sexualized image after initially emerging as a gospel artist. The “I Kissed A Girl” singer had plenty to draw from when she morphed into her alter ego Kathy Beth Terry for her “Last Friday Night” video. The adorable and precocious eighth grader rocked a mouth full of metal braces and huge coke bottle glasses. The 13-year-old even had her own twitter handle where she expressed her joy for Sudoku puzzles, high-school science fairs, Skip-It, Weenie Babies and Jonathan Taylor Thomas!
Justin Bieber
When Justin Bieber’s debut single “Baby” came out, he was a doe-eyed, baby-faced singer from Canada but he’s grown up before our eyes. He’s done a lot to shed his wholesome image and lately he’s been hanging out with the likes of Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Lil Wayne. To further prove his love for hip-hop and the culture, Biebs became the rapping alter ego Shawty Mane. As Mane, Biebs released a song and shot a video for “Speaking In Tongues.”
